This is a substantive consultant post. The post holder will undertake sessions at both Calderdale Royal Hospital (CRH) and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI).

We pride ourselves in being a very supportive department, both for our consultant and non- consultant colleagues alike. We have had a high success rate of our trainees progressing through exams and our specialty doctors progressing in to training posts.

The post attracts 10 Programmed Activities in the first instance subject to job planning but applicants wishing to work part time are also encouraged to apply and job plans will be adjusted accordingly, and by negotiation with appointees.

As well as general anaesthetic provision, the department can support Special Interests in Obstetrics and Paediatric Anaesthesia. Applications are encouraged from experienced consultants wishing to take up a new challenge or newly accredited consultants who will be supported through our highly regarded development programmes. The post holder is encouraged to develop his/her own sub-specialty interest.

Main duties of the job

This post requires a flexible attitude to working practices, managing patients in partnership with other consultant colleagues and professional staff and making the best possible use of resources

put at the disposal of the Department. This is likely to require negotiated changes of duties and time tabled sessions from time to time.

All consultants have a responsibility to liaise with their colleagues to co ordinate their individual activities to ensure the clinical service operates effectively and efficiently.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide high-quality anaesthetic services for elective and emergency patients, support perioperative care pathways, contribute to multidisciplinary working, and participate in departmental governance, education, and service development.

• Deliver anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgery
• Conduct pre-operative assessment and optimisation
• Provide perioperative and postoperative care
• Participate in consultant on-call rotas
• Support critical care, obstetric, paediatric or other specialist services as required
• Supervise and support junior medical staff and SAS doctors.
• Participate in teaching, training and educational supervision
• Contribute to audit, quality improvement and clinical governance activities.
