Consultant in Gastroenterology WSI Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) team are looking to recruit a substantive Consultant Gastroenterologist with a specialist interest in IBD to join our dedicated and highly motivated team. The post holder will join our current five Consultant IBD physicians and will be an active member of the multi-disciplinary team.

The successful candidate will work across three hospital sites within the Trust including Sandwell Health Campus, City Health Campus and our new state of the art acute care hospital facility, Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH).

Applicants must be a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent. Completion of higher specialty training in Gastroenterology or comparable is essential. Candidates applying for this post must either be on the Specialist Register for Gastroenterology or be within six months of being on the Register for trainees currently in a training programme in the UK.

Main duties of the job

The post will enable the successful applicant to develop sub-specialty interests in inflammatory bowel disease to complement the existing consultant staff.

The appointee will take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the clinical service, working with clinical and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times and developing clinical pathways in line with the maximum 18-week patient pathway guarantee. There will also be a commitment to the gastroenterology ward on-call as part of this post (consultant of the week 1, COW1), which at present is 1 in 12 (which may change in future) providing gastroenterology input 7 days a week and currently has a supplement of 3%. There will be a rest day following the COW1 week on Monday. The successful candidate will also undertake a consultant of the week 2 (COW2) shift twice a month providing in reach gastroenterology service to the acute medical unit in the morning followed by an inpatient endoscopy list in the afternoon. They will also take part in advice and guidance from primary care as well as doing the gastroenterology and triage service virtual clinic of 20 GP referrals per clinic. The appointee will be required to undertake 2 weekend endoscopy lists each year as part of their job plan.

Clinical Experience:

  • • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Gastroenterology and General (internal medicine)

  • • Special interest that complements the existing consultants
  • • Specialist interest in inflammatory bowel disease
  • • JAG accreditation for colonoscopy

Clinical Effectiveness

  • 9. Experience of conducting clinical audit

Teaching and Training experience:

  • 11. Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines.

  • • Formal training in teaching

  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
