Job overview
We are seeking to appoint a Consultant to support and further develop our expanding Gastroenterology service with an interest in Hepatology.
The post holder will contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive gastroenterology service, including elective and emergency endoscopy, gastroenterology outpatient services, and inpatient gastroenterology care. Inpatient responsibilities include the management of patients across one gastroenterology ward (C41) and associated outlier wards, responding to gastroenterology referrals from other specialties, and providing an in‑reach service to the Acute Medical Unit.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a hepatology specialty interest that aligns with the current and future needs of the department and to contribute to the ongoing development and management of this service.
The post holder will take responsibility for leading the gastroenterology ward on a 1‑in‑7 rota, delivering daily consultant‑led ward rounds over a seven‑day period. During the remaining six weeks of the ten‑week cycle, the post holder will deliver five direct clinical, face‑to‑face sessions per week (for example, three outpatient clinics and two endoscopy sessions), alongside attendance at multidisciplinary team meetings and the provision of inpatient and ward referral support.
Throughout the ten‑week cycle, the post holder will also participate in a 1:15 on‑call rota for out‑of‑hours emergency endoscopy.
Main duties of the job
This post does not include an on‑call commitment to acute general medicine. The successful candidate will contribute to elective and emergency endoscopy, outpatient gastroenterology clinics including liver, general and fast track, and inpatient gastroenterology services.
The post holder will participate in the acute gastroenterology Consultant of the Week rota on a 1‑in‑11 basis, with responsibility for patients on the gastroenterology ward (28 beds, WardC41) and gastroenterology patients on the medical outlier ward (A9). In addition, the post holder will contribute to the Gastroenterologist of the Day rota on a 1‑in‑13 basis, providing specialty in‑reach to the acute medical take, expert advice for cross‑specialty referrals, a daily inpatient endoscopy list, and out‑of‑hours emergency endoscopy for gastrointestinal bleeding.
Outside acute commitments, the post holder will deliver five direct clinical care sessions per week, for example three outpatient clinics and two endoscopy sessions, and attend relevant multidisciplinary team meetings. Endoscopy list allocation and clinic activity are in line with BSG, JAG, and Royal College guidance.
Time off in lieu may be considered for planned weekend working. The post includes 2.5 SPA sessions, with 1.5 SPA allocated for revalidation and the remainder supporting education, audit, research, or service development. One WTE secretarial support and full IT facilities will be provided.
