About the Role
We welcome applications from candidates trained in Paediatric Emergency Medicine from either a Paediatrics or Emergency Medicine background. This substantive Consultant post is based within the Paediatric Emergency Department and includes some Adult Emergency Medicine responsibilities.
The successful candidate will contribute to weekend, on-call, and shop floor cover (08:00 to midnight, 365 days a year). A self-rostering consultant rota offers flexibility in working patterns.
About You
- Hold, or be within six months of obtaining, a CCT in Emergency Medicine or Paediatrics with subspecialty accreditation in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
- Demonstrate equivalent clinical experience if following a non-CCT route.
- Be committed to delivering high-quality paediatric emergency care and effective multidisciplinary teamwork.
Main Duties
- Provide senior clinical leadership in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of children attending the Emergency Department.
- Supervise and support junior and middle-grade doctors, including providing specialist advice during on-call periods.
- Lead trauma team responses and participate in the consultant on-call rota to ensure timely emergency care.

Main duties of the job
- Manage children presenting with minor and major illness and trauma.
- Lead paediatric resuscitations and major trauma responses.
- Provide senior clinical decision-making and support patient flow through the emergency pathway.
- Supervise junior medical staff, advanced practitioners and nursing colleagues.
- Liaise with paediatric, surgical, orthopaedic, intensive care and mental health services.
- Definitive care of patient attendances.
- Immediate resuscitation of critically ill patients and thereafter referral to the appropriate department of those patients who require admission.
- Communication and liaison with other departments within the hospital both clinical and managerial.
- Communication and liaison with agencies outside the hospital including the Emergency Services, GP Surgeries, Urgent Care Centre’s and Tertiary Trauma Centre.
- Responsibility for the supervision, training and education of junior medical staff, with and active role in the training of nursing and other staff.
- The post holder may be named as the educational supervisor of several junior medical staff and supervising the ACPs.
- Continuing development of the service, using audit, the application of evidence-based medicine, support development of IT infrastructure, mentorship programme and streaming pathway.
- Dealing with personnel and other managerial issues.
- Support a culture of learning from excellence as well as learning from mistakes/errors.

Paediatric Responsibilities:
Role Purpose
- Provide expert assessment, diagnosis and management of acutely ill and injured infants, children and young people attending the Emergency Department.
- Deliver consultant-led care, clinical leadership and supervision within the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED).
- Support service development, governance, quality improvement, teaching and research activities.

- Develop and implement clinical guidelines and policies for paediatric emergency care.
- Contribute to departmental management and strategic planning.

- Deliver teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate learners.
- Provide clinical and educational supervision.
- Support RCEM and PEM trainee development through workplace assessments and mentoring.
Research and Service Development
- Participate in research and evidence-based practice.
- Contribute to service innovation and pathway redesign.
Qualifications
- GMC registration with licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Emergency Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT).
- Subspecialty accreditation in Paediatric Emergency Medicine or evidence of equivalent competency.
Experience
- Significant experience in paediatric emergency medicine.
- Experience in paediatric resuscitation and trauma management.
- Evidence of audit, quality improvement, teaching and leadership.
Skills
- Strong communication and multidisciplinary team-working skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and make rapid clinical decisions.

- • Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practice • Either CCT in Paediatrics or CCT in Emergency Medicine with subspecialist interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine or to be within six months of attaining CCT • MRCPCH or FCEM or equivalent • APLS provider status or equivalent
Desirable
- • CT in Paediatrics with subspecialty recognition for Paediatric Emergency Medicine • APLS/ALS/ATLS instructor status with experience of course administration • MIMMS provider status/ATLS provider status
