Applications are warmly invited for the position of Substantive Consultant in Anaesthesia with a specialist interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia, to join our dynamic and thriving A.C.S.A. accredited anaesthetic department at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking for committed anaesthetists of proven ability who can contribute fully to both clinical and managerial roles within the department. Candidates should bring skills or knowledge that will enhance and expand the services already provided at the Royal United Hospital. An ability to embrace change and develop services for more effective care delivery will be considered an asset.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will work clinically at the RUH (Royal United Hospital) Combe Park site and at Sulis Hospital (owned by the RUH). This post is a standard 10PA contract. Comprising 8.5 PAs Direct Clinical Care (including on call) and 1.5PAs Supporting Professional Activities in line with the national Consultant contract.

The clinical work will include elective and emergency operating lists across a broad range of surgical specialties (except for cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, vascular, burns, transplant, and major trauma) plus pre-operative assessment and peri-operative care.

This job includes a specialist interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia. Paediatric services at the RUH handle around 2,000 elective and emergency cases a year across urology, orthopaedics, ENT, ophthalmology, maxillofacial surgery, special care dentistry and radiology, including a dexmedetomidine sedation service for MRI and a developing virtual pre-operative assessment pathway. You will work closely with paediatricians, surgeons, theatre teams, emergency medicine, critical care and the wider multidisciplinary team, and contribute to clinical governance, education, quality improvement and service development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Duties: The holder of this post will be a Substantive Consultant Anaesthetist. The post will be based at the RUH, and the holder will participate in audit and directorate meetings and undertake administrative duties as required by the Clinical Lead for Anaesthesia. A commitment to maintain professional expertise by attendance at meetings and courses is expected, and completion of diaries for CME is essential. It is mandatory that you have an annual appraisal. Our rotas are published as early in advance as possible and we undertake to make the flexible element of the program as varied as possible, but this post will include specific paediatric sessions. There may be a variety of the following lists: general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, day-case surgery, urology, ENT, gynaecology, ophthalmology, dental, onco-plastic breast surgery and remote working (e.g. radiology suite). The department uses the HealthRota electronic rota management programme. Management Duties: The post holder will be expected to work with local managers, professional colleagues and allied medical professionals to ensure the safe and efficient running of services. Consultants are required to undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of clinical areas where they work.

General Requirements: Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the post holder will be expected to observe the Trust's agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders, financial instructions, and code of expectations of the Trust. Work Programme The work programme will be reviewed on a regular basis and agreed with the post holder, Divisional Manager and Clinical Lead for Anaesthesia following appointment. Where possible a regular timetable will be established, however the nature of the post requires the post holder to be flexible to maximise theatre and clinic capacity, this may include time shifting to weekend elective work. Our standard theatre day is 10 hours (2.5 PAs), but the appointee will also be expected to work planned 12-hour theatre days (3.3 PAs) on occasion. Local procedures will be followed in the event of any disagreement over proposed changes, culminating in an appeal to the Trust Board. Proposed Job Plan The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out consultants' duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education, clinical governance, private practice and any other responsibilities. The Trust is currently using the L2P system for job planning. There is an option for annualised job plans if desired.

Additional SPA may be allocated if additional duties are undertaken with the agreement of the Clinical Lead and Trust.
