Job overview

This is a permanent role within the Haematology department, based at the West Suffolk Hospital. The department covers an area with a population of around 280,000 and offers a wide-ranging service including inpatient chemotherapy, bispecific antibody therapy for lymphoma and myeloma, and post CAR-T therapy follow up care. Our haemato-oncology diagnostic service (HODS) and regional MDTs are based at Cambridge University Hospitals. The department provides a BCSH Level 2a service.

The post holder will have responsibility for patients with both malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions and will lead on the management of patients with haemostasis and thrombosis disorders. Our regional Haemophilia Comprehensive Care centre is Cambridge University Hospitals.

The post holder will also provide clinical support for our UKAS accredited Haematology laboratory, in particular for haemostasis.

All Consultants take responsibility for the ward inpatients on a pro-rata basis and participate in a 1:5 out of hours service with prospective cover.

Main duties of the job

• (a) Provision with Consultant colleagues of a BCSH Level 2 Haematology service to the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (b) Responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and the proper functioning of the department. (c) Responsibility relating to a special interest. (d) Cover for colleagues' leave and other authorised absences (e) Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff (f) Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally (g) Participating in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes, appraisal, job planning and in CPD (h) Involvement in research, where appropriate (i) Managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate (j) Staff are required to comply with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in line with Trust Policy (k) A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels (l) The post holder must at all times carry out their duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the care of patients with haematological problems and the work of the haematology laboratory.
• To share with colleagues’ responsibility for the day-to-day running of the haematology department.
• Teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students, laboratory and nursing staff.
• To share with consultant colleagues the responsibility for the out of hours service on an agreed rota of 1:5 with prospective cover.
• To take responsibility for ward inpatients on a pro-rata basis.
• Development of strong networking arrangements for the haematology laboratory services.
• To liaise with the clinical colleagues in other specialities, to provide an advisory service within the hospital and for local general practitioners and to be contactable when necessary.
• To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit.
• To ensure active participation in continuing medical education (CME) and to keep up to date with new developments in the field of haematology.
