We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking substantive Consultant in General and Colorectal Surgery, with a subspecialist interest in Abdominal Wall Reconstruction to join our team. We seek an individual who is motivated and committed to delivering high standards of patient care, service innovation, education, and clinical governance. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery and continued development of the existing high-quality elective colorectal service, in addition to supporting the busy emergency service. The successful candidate will join our well-established multidisciplinary team providing elective and emergency colorectal care to a diverse and multi-ethnic patient population.

Main duties of the job

PRINCIPAL ELEMENTS OF THE POST

  • The appointed Consultant Colorectal Surgeon will:  Provide high-quality elective and emergency colorectal surgical care   Participate in the Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery and specialist Colorectal on-call rota   Contribute to colorectal multidisciplinary team meetings and cancer pathways   Support the continued development of colorectal surgical services by engagement with colleagues, Clinical Management Group, wider Trust, GPs and commissioners  Supervise and teach resident doctors and surgical trainees   Participate in audit, governance, research, and quality improvement activities   Work collaboratively with nursing, allied health professionals, and medical colleagues to ensure safe and effective patient care   Proactively engage with administration colleagues to support high quality and efficient patient journeys  Maintain accurate clinical records and comply with Trust policies and professional standards  Respond to Trust requirements for the handling of complaints or investigations  Undertake required induction, statutory and mandatory training, appraisal and revalidation

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Delivery of consultant-led elective colorectal surgical services across inpatient, outpatient, and theatre settings for patients with a broad range of colorectal conditions, ensuring care is delivered to the highest clinical standards.

Delivery of a consultant-led service for patients who present as an emergency to the department of GI surgery at Leicester Royal Infirmary, via the Emergency Department or from General Practice, working alongside consultant colleagues (SDEC, oesophagogastric) to provide timely senior clinical decision-making for and management of urgent and emergency surgical admissions.

Provision of lower GI endoscopy services across main Trust sites and in community hospitals, if appropriate.

Regular mandatory participation in weekly colorectal and anal cancer MDT meetings.

Close liaison with on-site Gastroenterology colleagues.

In addition to direct clinical care, the post holder will play a key role in supporting the education and training of junior medical staff, surgical trainees, and other members of the multidisciplinary team. Given our affiliation with the University of Leicester Medical School, there will be opportunities to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, as well as mentorship and supervision responsibilities.

Active engagement in clinical governance activities including audit, morbidity and mortality review, guideline development, and quality improvement projects.

Participation in research and service innovation is encouraged, supporting the department’s commitment to delivering modern, evidence-based surgical care.

The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues across surgery, oncology, gastroenterology, radiology, pathology, and specialist nursing teams to maintain and enhance the quality of colorectal services within the Trust.
