Job overview

We are looking for a new Consultant to join the Team at LTHTR.

This will be a permanent full-time post within the Adult Allergy and Clinical Immunology services and will be based at Royal Preston Hospital, (although applicants who would like a part-time post will be considered).

The successful candidate must be on the specialist register (Immunology) of the GMC or be eligible to be on the specialist register within six months of the date of the Appointments Advisory Committee.

The Allergy and Clinical Immunology service is well established and has been providing clinical care since 1979. This is a regional service and serves a population of approximately 1.6 million people. The service is Specialised Commissioned for both Adult Allergy and Immunology.

You must have completed the approved Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB) curriculum in Immunology or demonstrate (to PMETB or an Appointments Advisory Committee) evidence of equivalence in knowledge, training and experience of Immunology and the care of patients with allergic and immunological disorders.

You must also hold the MRCP (UK) or show evidence of equivalent training and experience.

The successful applicant will be based at the Royal Preston Hospital, but under exceptional circumstances, may be expected to undertake sessions across our other Hospital Site, at Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

You will provide a clinical service for the investigation and management of patients with disorders of immunity, principally primary and secondary immune deficiency and allergy, however also of patients with other clinical conditions in which disorders of the immune function is thought to play a role.

The service will be for GPs, Hospital colleagues and will be conducted by regular outpatient clinics, written and telephone correspondences.

You would also advise on the management of inpatients under the care of other Consultants on request.

Supervise the specialist nurses, who work directly with the Consultants in the clinics, and will also jointly with the other consultant oversee Immunoglobulin therapy, subcutaneous immunotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy and oral/ drug provocation tests.

You will, jointly with the Consultants, also liaise with the specialist nurses to manage home therapy for immunoglobulin and C1 inhibitor therapies.

Supervise when necessary, allergen immunotherapy, oral provocation test, drug provocation test and immunoglobulin replacement therapy.

Assume a continuing commitment for the care of patients, ensuring in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for cover of leave and off duty periods.

Promote high professional standards of clinical care of the patients and the health and safety of the environment and maintain continuing medical education at least to the requirements of the Royal Colleges

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT

Desirable

  • Evidence of academic excellence in Clinical Immunology.
  • MSc/MD/PhD

Experience and Skills

Essential

  • Trained Clinical Supervisor
  • Experience in the diagnosis and clinical management on in-patient, out-patient and home therapy patients with immunodeficiency and management of allergic disease.

Desirable

  • Trained Educational Supervisor
  • Experience in research leading to publication in immunology and allergy

Research and Development

Essential

  • Evidence of interest in personal development e.g. through research and/or publications
