Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and forward thinking Cellular Pathologist to join our existing team of consultants with the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and skills in the field of Cardiothoracic and Renal Pathology.

Applicants are expected to have a strong background in Cellular Pathology and be able to work as part of a multiple sub-specialised team.

Primary reporting and MDT provision is undertaken using Digital Pathology using the Indica Halo AP system, which is UKAS accredited.  Full training and support transition to digital reporting will be provided.

You will be supported by a well-established experienced specialist reporting team. The appointee, in collaboration with the other Consultants will be expected to fulfil the duties detailed in Job description

Main duties

  • To actively participate in both departmental and trust matters concerning Cellular Pathology.
  • Share appropriate clinical responsibility for Cellular Pathology along with the consultant team.
  • To actively participate in both Departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit
  • Participate in MDT meetings
  • Undertake surgical cut up when required
  • Teaching and training

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a comprehensive Histopathology diagnostic service, including full clinical liaison, to:

Clinicians at NUH.

Other users of the histopathology service in the greater Nottingham health community.

Other hospitals that hold service level agreements for specialist services with NUH.

To be involved in the training of Specialty Trainees, scientific and BMS staff.

Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave

To contribute, as required, to the teaching of pathology to undergraduates and postgraduates within the Medical School of University of Nottingham.

To take part in Medical Audit and Quality Control.

To pursue a programme of Continuous Professional and Medical Education/ Development (CME/CPD) with the Royal College of Pathologists

To participate in annual Individual Performance Reviews (IPR) and Consultant appraisals.

To contribute to the requirements of Clinical Governance. To share in the administrative duties associated with the running of a clinical laboratory

Management Skills

Essential

  • Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery
  • Able to delegate appropriately.
  • Able to work in a team

Desirable

  • Higher management degree or qualification or training
  • Experience of change management
  • Calm under pressure

Clinical Skills/Experience

Essential

  • Evidenced technical skills as described in the job description
  • Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with health professionals, patients and families when required.
  • Demonstrates experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching.
  • Demonstrates experience in clinical audit and governance processes.

Desirable

  • Specific training in communication skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
  • Experience of digital pathology systems use i.e. for MDT and primary reporting.

Teaching, Audit & Research

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit.
  • Able to teach and support junior staff effectively.

Education & Occupational Attainments

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • FRCPath or equivalent
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (existing consultants must be able to demonstrate active participation in a recognised CPD scheme).
