Job overview

Applications are being sought for the post of Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust (UHD). The candidate will join the team of 7 (5 full time and 2 part time) Coronary Interventionalists based at the Dorset Heart Centre. The post has been developed to support the PCI service in view of two Interventional Cardiologists taking partial retirement and now covering a single position on the primary PCI on-call rota. There are no general medical commitments. You must have (or be within 6 months of obtaining) a CCT in cardiology.

As part of our commitment to delivering high-quality care across seven days, this post may involve participation in an out-of-hours rota, including evenings, weekends, and/or bank holidays, in accordance with service needs. Any work undertaken outside standard hours/PA’s will attract remuneration in line with the respective NHS Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service.

Main duties of the job

The busy PCI service covers Dorset, and adjacent parts of Hampshire and Wiltshire, a catchment of approx. 1 million.

The current PCI volume is approximately 1500 cases per year which includes up to 400 primary PCI treated through a 24/7 service. We employ all standard and advanced PCI techniques. This includes multi-vendor pressure wire, and imaging with integrated intravascular ultrasound (Philips & Boston) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). We have a full range of strategies for calcium modification including rotational, laser and orbital atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy. There is a CTO programme and access to mechanical circulatory support with Impella.

We have extensive experience of bifurcation PCI including left main and had a long association with dedicated stent programmes. We have an affiliation with the European Bifurcation Club. Many patients are recruited into international clinical trials of PCI techniques, strategies and devices. Indeed, the unit has developed a reputation for high volume enrolment, subject retention and provision of excellent quality data.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will join a team of 21 substantive Consultant Cardiologists across UHD.

They will contribute to a comprehensive consultant-led secondary/tertiary cardiology and coronary intervention service. They should have broad experience in all aspects of clinical cardiology and coronary intervention.

Given the department’s long-term focus of enhancing its academic output, the applicant must possess a post graduate research degree with experience of ongoing clinical research.

They will be expected to support and develop existing research activity. Research PA, which already exist for some Consultants, will ideally be expanded to colleagues demonstrating academic output.

The post holder will contribute to the primary PCI on call rota (1 in 7 weekdays and 1 in 10 weekends), rotational cover of coronary care unit (1 in 21) and inpatient bed base shared with consultant colleagues. The appointee will be expected to spend 10 Programmed Activities per week (Two fixed PCI sessions) with possible additional work eg flexible PCI lists according to service need.

Applicant requirements

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.
