Job overview

This is a new post and has been configured to support the increasing demand for complex cardiac electrophysiology / ablation and advanced pacing procedures within the Trust. The post will also contribute to the acute cardiology service providing additional support for the increased number of patients admitted with acute general cardiac conditions.

The successful applicant will join a team of 23 full time consultant cardiologists and will contribute to a comprehensive consultant-led secondary and tertiary cardiology service. He/she will have broad experience in all aspects of clinical cardiology, with particular expertise in advanced electrophysiology and complex device implantation. Additional expertise in Inherited Cardiac Conditions could be accommodated.

Most activity will be delivered within the tertiary centre at NUH. The appointee will participate in the Consultant of the week rota rotating through the Acute Cardiac Unit and in-patient wards currently on a 3:20 rotation. They will also participate in the QMC rota also currently 1:10. Weekend on-call is 48 hours from Saturday 9am until Monday 9am also on a 1:10 basis. On-call frequency may change with future appointments. Time of in-lieu is given following weekend working.

Every new post within the department of Medicine now has a commitment to General Medicine to help with the flow of patients from the Emergency Dept. This post has a commitment of 0.5 PA per week for Medicine.

Main duties of the job

Experience of VT ablation and an in-depth practical and theoretical working knowledge of modern 3D anatomical mapping technologies are essential.

Participation in the on-call rota for non-interventional cardiology (currently 1 in 10 covering both campuses). In addition the post holder will be expected to contribute to combined cardiac and cardiac surgical case meetings at NCH. There will be an agreed and equitable share of support (including junior and middle grade medical staff) with the other consultants in cardiology.

Each consultant is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities including (but not restricted to) clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD, revalidation and Evidence-Based Practice.

Both main campuses of the Trust are major centres for undergraduate and postgraduate education and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to play a role in postgraduate teaching within the 10 PA job plan. Contribution to undergraduate teaching and educational/clinical supervision will be reviewed and mutually agreed.

The Trust has extremely close links with Nottingham University, and has academic departments in the majority of its clinical specialties. There are University and Trust research facilities. The Trust has a research strategy and management framework which aligns its funding for research with the research and innovations activities it supports.

Essential

  • Full GMC registration Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register CCT expected within 6 months of interview date

Desirable

  • MD / PhD (or equivalent)

Management skills

Essential

  • Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery. Able to delegate appropriately. Able to work in a team.

Desirable

  • Higher management degree or qualification or training. Experience of change management

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Wide experience in cardiovascular medicine. Expertise in advanced electrophysiology and complex device implantation. Experience in acute medicine

Desirable

  • Post CCT training/experience in EP work. Specific training in communication skills. Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors . Inherited Cardiac Conditions . Lead extraction.

Teaching, Audit and Research

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit. Able to teach and support junior staff effectively.

Desirable

  • Original high quality research publications relevant to proposed sub-speciality area of interest
