Job overview
An opportunity has arisen within the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust for the appointment of a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon. The successful candidate will join the Upper GI & Intestinal Failure Clinical Service Unit, based primarily at Salford Royal Hospital, which provides regional services including oesophago-gastric cancer, bariatric and metabolic surgery, complex benign upper gastrointestinal surgery, and emergency general surgery. The bariatric service, established two decades ago, is the sole Tier 4 provider in the region and delivers a comprehensive multidisciplinary programme including primary and revisional bariatric surgery, medical weight management, and long-term follow-up. The department also provides specialist services for complex hiatal disease, abdominal wall reconstruction, and benign upper gastrointestinal disorders.
The successful applicant will contribute to the ongoing development of bariatric and metabolic surgical services across the Northern Care Alliance and will participate in the Emergency General Surgery rota and acute gallbladder service alongside consultant colleagues from across the general surgical specialties.
The post offers opportunities for clinical leadership, service innovation, education, research, and quality improvement within a large teaching hospital and integrated healthcare system.
Main duties of the job
It is proposed that the appointee will provide 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week, incorporating outpatient clinics, operating theatre sessions, endoscopy lists, multidisciplinary team meetings, administration, and participation in the Emergency General Surgery on-call rota. The job plan will be flexible and agreed with the successful candidate following appointment. The post holder will contribute to the management of patients with benign upper gastrointestinal disorders including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, hiatal and paraoesophageal hernias, gallstone disease, abdominal wall hernias, and other benign Upper GI conditions. There will be opportunities to contribute to the ongoing development of specialist benign Upper GI services across the CSU. The appointee will participate in diagnostic and therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy appropriate to their skills, accreditation, and service requirements. Maintenance of endoscopic competence and participation in quality assurance processes will be expected. The post holder will contribute to the Northern Care Alliance acute gallbladder service, including the delivery of index-admission cholecystectomy pathways and the development of a standardised "Hot Gallbladder" pathway across NCA sites. The Trust is committed to improving timely access to acute gallbladder surgery and reducing variation in patient care.
