NHS Shetland is the most northerly Health Service in Scotland and is a unique setting in which to develop your career. We are, of course, a small organisation, with circa 700 staff looking after the health needs of 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. However, what we lack in size, we more than make up for by way of highly integrated, person centred and multi-professional ethos that characterises every aspect of our operations.
We are looking to appoint consultant anaesthetists to work for NHS Shetland at the Gilbert Bain Hospital, Lerwick. The Anaesthetic Department provides comprehensive general anaesthetic and critical care services. In addition, because of the remote nature of Shetland there is the necessity for anaesthetists to provide an enhanced trauma resuscitation service, to provide expertise in the resuscitation and stabilisation of neonates and paediatric patients, and to reap the reward of being able to adapt core anaesthetic skills to suit unpredictable and potentially challenging clinical scenarios arising outside the traditional theatre-based environment.
We are offering full-time posts but will discuss alternative working arrangements including annualised hours.
Pro rata annual leave will apply with 2 full weeks study leave. Depending on experience and qualifications additional leave may be possible in order to obtain the skills required to work in the most remote Health Board in Scotland.

Experience
Essential
- Recent generalist experience at consultant level in Anaesthetics including acute on-call.
- Experience of critical care at senior trainee or consultant level including on-call.
Desirable
- Critical care/transfer experience and/or demonstrable ability and willingness to upskill in stabilisation/critical care of the unwell neonate, child and adult.
- Subspecialty experience in a relevant discipline e.g. paediatric, obstetric, remote and rural Anaesthesia, critical care, transfer medicine or chronic pain.
- Previous experience of working at senior level within the NHS
Circumstances of Job
Essential
- There will be rostered out of hours work. However due to geographic location and demands on the single on-call anaesthetist this may necessitate supporting them out with rostered hours. This will be by separate arrangement
- In daytime hours there will be the requirement to flex between SPA activity and clinical work depending on the variable workload for the anaesthetic team.
- Applicants will therefore need to demonstrate willingness to work flexibly.

Qualifications and Training
Essential
- GMC Registered medical practitioner
- FRCA or equivalent
- Be on, or eligible for inclusion on, within 6 months of interview the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthesia with a licence to practice. (For successful applicants planning to follow the CSER process a locum appointment would be made for a maximum of one year to allow the process to be completed)
Desirable
- APLS, ALS, ATLS provider or instructor status or willingness to undertake this training in a timely way.
- GMC recognised trainer
- Educational/clinical supervisor and able to sign off trainees on the RCoA lifelong learning platform.
- Additional post-graduate qualifications, e.g. MD/PhD/MSc or sub-specialty training in obstetric anaesthesia or pain medicine
