Job overview

At present the senior staffing is organised with two consultants rostered from 08:00 – 18:00 Monday to Friday with a consultant rostered to cover the ICCU from 18:00 to 08:00. The weekend cover (Friday p.m. through to Monday a.m.) is normally split between two consultants.  The weekday consultant ICM cover is currently provided within a “week about” system with the nominated consultant of the week supported by a second consultant. It is envisaged that the newly appointed Consultant job plans will reflect a ‘week about’ commitment to the ICU.

Main duties of the job

1 a)       In conjunction with the ICM Clinical Lead, ICCU Matron, ICM Consultants and other colleagues, contribute to the provision of a 24/7 consultant led service in Intensive Care Medicine as part of the Critical Care Services Directorate according to those agreed in the Job Plan.

1 b)       In conjunction with Consultant colleagues participate in the provision of an out of hours (on-call) consultant Intensive Care Medicine service for the Directorate and Trust. This includes being on-call for immediate return to NXH, telephone advice and major incidents.

2.         To provide cover for Consultant and other colleagues in respect of periods for annual, study and professional and other leave.

3.         To deputise for absent colleagues (such as for sickness leave), as far as is practicable.

4.         To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.

5.         To develop & maintain such special skills, competencies and interests appropriate to the agreed overall development in Intensive Care Medicine as agreed at job planning & appraisal (Personal Development Plan). In conjunction with Consultant and other colleagues, to take part in Quality Improvement activity including audit and research as appropriate.

• 6.     To support and provide teaching and training of junior medical staff, post graduate medical education and clinical technologists. 7.     To provide specialist advice and skills training to colleagues from other disciplines as required for the optimum delivery of patient care. 8.     To develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate, where appropriate, in clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities. 9.     To develop and maintain good communications with General Medical (and Dental) Practitioners and appropriate outside agencies. 10.  To ensure one’s own practice is up-to-date, including taking responsibility for own Continuing Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance Review. 11.  To maintain registration with and the professional standards and obligations set out by the General Medical Council. 12.  To participate in an annual Appraisal and Job Plan review.
