Job overview

As a Consultant in Acute Medicine at Torbay Hospital, you will provide the highest quality patient care across our Acute Medicine domain, which includes our Acute Medicine Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and the Acute Assessment Aerea.

Patient safety, dignity and care are central to our ethos, and as a senior member of the team, you will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with acute medical conditions, ensuring that they receive a ‘second-to-none’ standard of care from admission to discharge. You will work closely with other consultants, resident doctors, and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure patient pathways operate unhindered.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide high quality consultant delivered care to patients requiring our service, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are met
  • take responsibility for the management of patients admitted on the medical take, post-take ward round (PTWR), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Acute Assessment Area.
  • To provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • To supervise and train the junior clinical team and our specialty doctor
  • To be proactive in the Department’s clinical governance agenda and take on leadership roles to support continuous learning and improvement, thereby abiding by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the Trust

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Acute Medicine team is responsible for the care of patients on the Acute Medical Unit and SDEC, alongside providing an Acute Medicine in-reach service in the Emergency Department during daytime hours. The general medical on-call work is shared with general medical colleagues from a range of specialties. We have excellent working relationships with the specialty physicians, with specialty advice easily available via a hot phone system.

There is a well-established multi-disciplinary team structure in our clinical areas, with daily business MDT board rounds. The emergency assessment ward receives excellent Friends and Family feedback, and the nursing staff maintain a strong, caring team approach in a busy, high turnover environment. Feedback has particularly highlighted the excellent team communication. The therapy and discharge team take a proactive role in discharge planning and can access a range of intermediate care services to support discharge to the community. We also benefit from in-reach support from critical care, acute oncology and a range of other specialist nursing services.

The Acute Medical Unit is adjacent to the Emergency Department and Outpatient facilities. This is a dedicated non-ward area as an assessment unit and includes purpose-built same-day emergency care and frailty facilities.
