An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Community Senior Maternity Support Worker (SMSW) to join our dedicated maternity team. Working in partnership with midwives and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will provide safe, compassionate, and holistic care to women, babies, and families throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period.

This rewarding role combines direct clinical care, family support, health promotion, and service improvement. You will be a key point of contact for women and families, offering evidence-based information, supporting informed decision-making, and helping to coordinate care across community and hospital services.

We are looking for a motivated and compassionate individual with excellent communication and organisational skills, a commitment to person-centred care, and the ability to work confidently within a supportive team environment. Main duties of the job

  • Provide high-quality support to women, babies, and families during pregnancy and the postnatal period under the supervision of a registered midwife.
  • Promote personalised, woman-centred care and support informed decision-making.
  • Offer evidence-based advice on infant feeding, newborn care, and postnatal wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with midwives, specialist teams, and community services to coordinate care and support families with additional or complex needs.
  • Recognise and escalate clinical, social, or safeguarding concerns appropriately.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential electronic records in line with information governance requirements.
  • Support the supervision and development of junior maternity support workers and contribute to staff training.
  • Participate in service improvement, audit, digital initiatives, and quality assurance activities.
  • Act as a positive role model, promoting equality, dignity, respect, and excellent patient experience at all times.

Experience

Essential

  • Willingness to undertake NVQ training according to the requirements of the role
  • Willingness to undertake training in basic skills in accordance with job description

  • Filing experience

Personal Attributes

Essential

  • Ability to carry out a full range of duties associated with the post with aids or adaptations, which may be appropriate
  • Capable of escorting and moving patients from one area of the Trust to another

Education & Qualifications

Essential

  • BTEC level 3 qualification in health care or equivalent
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills
  • Keyboard skills
  • Basic computing qualification

Desirable

  • Experience with EPR system

  • An ability to work with others to develop more efficient/effective ways of working
  • Ability to prioritize own workload
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills, both face to face and over the telephone
