Are you an experienced and compassionate midwife with a passion for providing high-quality community-based maternity care? We have an exciting opportunity for a skilled and motivated midwife to lead our Community Midwifery Team, supporting the delivery of safe, personalised and effective care for women and families throughout their pregnancy journey.

As a Lead Community Midwife, you will provide visible clinical and operational leadership across community maternity services, supporting the delivery of national and local maternity priorities while promoting continuity, safety and positive outcomes for women and babies. You will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues to drive service improvement, maintain high standards of care and ensure an excellent patient experience.

The successful candidate will be an experienced practitioner with advanced clinical skills, a strong understanding of community maternity services, and the ability to support and develop staff while maintaining a focus on quality, governance and service excellence. Main duties of the job

  • Providing visible leadership and day-to-day management of community midwifery services, ensuring high standards of care, safety and patient experience. Supporting the implementation of national maternity policy, trust objectives and quality improvement initiatives. Leading on workforce management, including staff supervision, roster management, sickness absence management, recruitment, retention and staff wellbeing. Ensuring compliance with clinical governance requirements, audits, risk management processes and incident investigations, embedding learning into practice. Supporting and developing midwifery staff through clinical supervision, appraisal, education and mentorship. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, partner organisations and service users to improve maternity care pathways and outcomes. Monitoring service performance and activity, taking action to address challenges and drive continuous service improvement. Acting as a clinical role model and expert practitioner, providing support and guidance for complex clinical situations and escalations. Supporting the delivery of continuity of care and equitable access to services for women, birthing people and their families. Contributing to the strategic development of community maternity services and deputising for the Maternity outpatient matron when required.

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Extensive post registration experience
  • Experience of working in both hospital and community settings
  • Evidence of contribution to developing midwifery practice or education and training.
  • Guideline and policy development Clinical audit
  • Ability to motivate, support and develop staff within a positive team culture.

Desirable

  • Experience of implementing change management projects
  • Management of people
  • Experience of Leading a team in the community setting
  • Experience of leading a team

SKILLS/ABILITIES

Essential

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Teaching and presentation skills
  • IT skills – awareness of data quality issues
  • Ability to initiate change and participate in implementing new policies and procedures

  • NVQ Mentor/Assessor Training
  • Examination and assessment of the newborn

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

  • Awareness and understanding of current national and local midwifery issues.
  • Demonstrate a desire to improve standards
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and risk management
  • Ability to deliver personalised and culturally responsive care
  • Understanding of health inequalities and their impact on maternity outcomes
  • Experience of multidisciplinary and multi-agency working across community services.
  • Experience of workforce planning, workload management and service coordination.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults legislation and pathways

  • Experience of roster management and capacity planning

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • NMC Registered Midwife
  • BSc in Midwifery
  • Evidence of professional development

Desirable

  • Masters in Midwifery, or evidence of working towards
  • Professional Midwifery Advocate
  • Leadership/Management qualification or equivalent experience
