Job overview

The role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW)  (PUNJABI SPEAKING) in the Community is to support the community midwifery team with the delivery of high quality care to all women in the antenatal period and to all mothers and their babies in the postnatal period.

This role is offered as Band 2 MSW to develop to a Band 3 MSW. You will be expected to complete the NHS care certificate within 6 months of joining to progress to Band 3 level .

This will involve providing direct care to women and their babies.  It is essential that you speak  fluent Punjabi, and work as part of the enhanced care pathway team.  This MSW will improve the accessibility of information, including through an improved translation offer.A driving license and access to a car are essential.

The role also focuses on providing education around good parenting models and enabling women and their partners to care for their babies independently and effectively.

The community maternity support worker may be required to work at weekends as required by the community midwifery service.

Main duties of the job

The community MSW will be required to work alone in the women’s home and other community settings supported by the Trust’s Lone Worker Policy. The MSW will work under the direction of a qualified midwife who will remain accountable for the care provided.

The MSW will be responsible for her actions and omissions. This will be achieved by the performance of specific care tasks, carried out after successfully completing a programme of formal training and assessment. In addition, the role will encompass clerical duties including basic use of the computer.

You will provide direct care to women and their babies.  The role also focuses on providing education around good parenting models and enabling women and their partners to care for their babies independently and effectively.

You will contribute to the success of the multidisciplinary team in delivering an excellent, professional and compassionate maternity service to women, babies and their families.

As a community Maternity Support Worker you will help to ensure that the experience of the Trust of women, babies and their families is a positive and one.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team in a professional and sympathetic manner under the direct and indirect supervision of the community midwife.
• Ability to work as part of an enhanced care pathway team providing continuity of care
• Improve the accessibility of information, including through an improved translation offer for those without English as their first language
• Improve accessibility of information, including through a focus on addressing digital exclusion and by providing materials in accessible and ‘easy read’ and translated formats.
• Working within the community team to ensure excellent collaborative working and achieve a high standard of care.
• Delivering care to women and babies to assist them in their daily living activities within the home environment and liaising promptly with the assigned midwife any concerns with regards to the mother and baby’s well-being.
• Developing knowledge and understanding of the needs of the newborn baby and give practical support to mothers with the care of their babies such as bathing, weighting and cord care.
• Assisting women in their chosen method of infant feeding.
• Assisting the community midwives with antenatal clinics and Parent Education Classes.
• Alerting appropriate personnel to Safeguarding concerns
• Developing relevant clerical and IT skills to support the needs of the community midwifery team.
• Will be to carry out the full role as a Band 3 Maternity Care Assistant Lone worker in homes, community hubs and a variety of sites, develop and maintain skills in the agreed competencies
