You will have regular supervision and opportunity for joint work with an experienced clinical psychologist who has been in the renal department for years and currently works 2 days a week. There are also exciting developments in the broader renal service in the trust, with opportunities for more integration and new ways of working for psychology. There are opportunities to work flexibly and creatively, drawing on a range of therapeutic models and theories, including CBT, ACT and CFT. You would share office space with psychology colleagues from Haematology, offering plenty of opportunities for sharing innovations and informal support.
Main duties of the job
To provide specialist psychological assessments of renal patients by interpreting and integrating complex data from psychometric tests, self-report measures, observations, and interviews with clients, families, and carers
.
To formulate and implement evidence-based psychological treatment plans for managing complex difficulties, utilizing appropriate conceptual frameworks across all renal care settings.
To be responsible for implementing range of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, and groups. This involves synthesizing multiple explanatory models and refining formulations to meet evolving clinical needs.
To evaluate and decide upon treatment options by considering theoretical models and complex factors, including chronic illness, historical contexts, and developmental processes affecting the individual or group.
To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment, and discharge of renal clients managed via psychologically based care plans.
To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance, and consultation to other professionals involved in the client’s care to support holistic management.
To ensure the Renal multidisciplinary team has access to a psychologically based framework for understanding clients’ difficulties through consultation, clinical advice, and the dissemination of research and theory.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Applications for the post will be particularly welcomed from candidates with experience of working in Clinical Health Psychology settings, However, experienced candidates who are able to demonstrate relevant skills developed in other specialties and who are keen to develop expertise in clinical health settings would also be considered. Our priority is to appoint the right person to the role, and so we are offering this as a Band 7 or 8a dependent on experience. Days of work can be discussed but will need to include either a Thursday or a Friday.

Essential
- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems.
- Experience of psychological work with people with physical health difficulties.
Desirable
- Experience working in a renal service
- Experience of representing psychology within the context of medical multi-disciplinary care.
- Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
- Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
- Post qualification experience of working in a clinical NHS setting.
- Experience of adapting psychological interventions to manage the fluctuating medical needs of people with complex medical conditions.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
- Knowledge of clinical health psychology models / psychological aspects of chronic illness
- Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
- Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
Desirable
- High level knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological approaches for specific problems (e.g. traumatic reactions, bereavement, adherence difficulties, preparation for medical treatment).
- Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group
- Knowledge and understanding of problems faced by Renal patients.
- Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS.
- Formal training in supervision of other psychologists.
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
Training & Qualifications
Essential
- Doctoral level training in clinical/counselling psychology (or equivalent), as accredited by the BPS.
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) (or entitled to be registered at the completion of relevant training)
Desirable
- Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology
- Membership of the British Psychological Society Division of Clinical Psychology / Faculty of Clinical Health Psychology
