The Academic Directorate of Neuroscience wishes to recruit an individual keen to develop a career in clinical research. The Directorate has a growing portfolio of research activity and is keen to develop services in order to conduct further clinical research.  The aim of this post is to work full time on the CognoStroke project in patient recruitment and assessment. CognoStroke is an automated cognitive assessment tool designed to identify memory problems in people who have had a stroke https://www.cognospeak.com/cognostroke.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assist in supporting a portfolio of clinical trials, from study set up to archiving, in accordance with clinical trial protocols, laboratory manuals and all relevant regulatory standards.

The role will involve completing and submitting documents to the Clinical Research and Innovation Office (CRIO) obtain approvals; collecting, recording and maintaining research data records; entering activity data and extracting information from databases, providing clinical and administrative support to Research Nurses including performing clinical tests and investigations, processing and shipping samples and assisting with screening and recruitment processes.  Post holders may also support, and be responsible for, relevant studies in their own right.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 18 months due to the post being recruited as part of a limited term project within the Trust. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts taking into consideration the requirement for the post to be maintained as a part of the project’s implementation and the timescales associated with this.

Please note all existing NHS staff will only be considered on a secondment basis. This must first be agreed with your current line manager.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting as a clinical support worker/healthcare assistant or similar role
  • Experience of working in a clinical research/ research environment

Desirable

  • Experience of Data Entry
  • Experience of Lab processes
  • Completion of the STH 5-Day Healthcare Support Worker Programme

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Demonstrates insight/understanding into the role applied for in delivering research trials within a clinical setting
  • Understands the importance of confidentiality and demonstrates a knowledge of how it can be maintained
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both patients and colleagues, including the ability to discuss sensitive issues demonstrating tact and empathy
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions in order to complete assigned tasks
  • Numerate with good IT skills, including use of databases and competence in standard PC packages
  • Effective time management skills and ability to prioritise and work to conflicting deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to understand and follow complex Laboratory Manuals and Standard Operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a Team

Desirable

  • Skills and experience in undertaking clinical skills: Phlebotomy ECG Recording
  • Experience of handling biological samples

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above or equivalent qualification/experience..
  • Educated to ‘A ‘ level standard or equivalent-Diploma level 4 qualification/BTEC level 4/Access to higher education diploma/advanced apprenticeship/AS level/international Baccalaureate diploma/T Level

Desirable

  • Good Clinical Practice Certificate
  • Evidence of study on a research course or equivalent
  • Possess or be working towards a degree, preferably health science or science related
