Main duties of the job
As a Clinical Technologist, you will be responsible for fitting, maintaining, and testing specialist equipment, and supporting the team to deliver a timely and efficient service to patients referred for assessment for an environmental control system. The role will involve travelling to patients' homes, nursing homes, and other hospitals, and the post holder will be required to use their own car. Expenses for work-related travel will be reimbursed in arrears.

- Confident in the use of computer database, management systems, and office software applications. Ability to analyse complex technical problems, interpret and make appropriate decisions, with some supervision when necessary. Ability to install, programme, repair and maintain electrical, electronic and computer-based systems as directed by more senior staff. Ability to confidently navigate, configure, and maintain iOS and Android operating systems. Competent in the setup, deployment, and troubleshooting of smartphones, tablets, and associated applications and equipment, ensuring devices are configured safely and effectively for clinical and assistive technology use. Ability to write or input electronically the results of interventions that are clear, concise, accurate and timely. Ability to test and calibrate electrical/electronic equipment including PAT testing, PPM programme, and formal record keeping. Ability to understand and follow electronic circuit diagrams. Able to plan own work, liaise with users, suppliers etc. and to take responsibility for own quality of work and outcomes. Able to exercise own initiative when dealing with issues within own area of competence.

- Electronic device design and construction using small workshop facilities. Electronic systems design skills relevant to Electronic Assistive Technology. Computer software programming skills. In-house construction and modification of specialist electronic devices. Fault finding skills relating to Electronic Assistive Technology or other complex patient critical and multi-faceted equipment.

- Professional knowledge of electrical/electronic, electromechanical and computer systems acquired through formal training and experience. Knowledge of the role of Assistive Technology and Environmental Control Systems and its application and impact on individual functioning. Interest in, and knowledge of, computer systems and emerging technologies. Legislation, International Standards and Policies governing the safety of electrical equipment, PPM and PAT testing. Concepts of Clinical Governance, AIRS reporting, Risk Assessments and the role of MHRA. Understanding of the need for confidentiality.

- Knowledge of the range of existing Environmental Control Systems and technology solutions. Knowledge of risk assessment and evaluation with relation to equipment provision. Knowledge of Medical Device Directive. Knowledge of MHRA guidance related to equipment management and manufacture.
Experience

- Experience in equipment setup, servicing, repair and maintenance of medical equipment or similar electronic/computer devices. Experience of carrying out equipment planned preventative maintenance and/or equipment management. Experience of fault finding in electronic and/or computing devices. Basic workshop skills and use of tools (hand and powered) relevant to electromechanical equipment. Experience in a technical service, offering support to clients using electronic and/or computer equipment.
Desirable
- Experience of Electronic Assistive Technology. Experience of working with people with disabilities. Experience of risk assessment and other relevant procedures relating to the safe provision of equipment.
Qualifications

- Car owner/driver and ability to drive long distances across Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Ability to drive and hold a clean driving license and able to use personal car for work purposes. Ability to use a keyboard to access and input information from a computer-based system. Ability to move and handle equipment and work in confined spaces. Ability to use fine tools to adjust and fit equipment, components and switches. Also to use power tools as required. Use of computers software to include Word, Excel and PowerPoint and to input and extract data from the Trust I.T. systems. Undertake home visits which may involve exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions including human excrement, dirt, fleas and lice. Exposure to distressing circumstances when dealing with patients with life limiting conditions, and when patients die and equipment needs to be removed from the patient’s home.
