The Oncology Unit is looking for a caring, compassionate and motivated person to join our close-knit team. We provide treatment and support to people with cancer across North Lancashire and South Cumbria. Working in oncology can be extremely rewarding, in the knowledge that you are helping others to navigate their cancer journey. The Oncology & Haematology department has an excellent reputation for providing compassionate, patient centred care. Important Note: The role is based at two hospital sites - Lancaster 5 days per week and Kendal 2 days per week. Applicants MUST be prepared and available to work at either site as required.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the role are assisting in the smooth running of oncology out-patient clinics and supporting patient and staff in the chemotherapy treatment rooms.
New staff must be willing to learn new skills and ways of working to enhance their own development and benefit the department.
Working in cancer care requires the ability to communicate and empathise with people living with life threatening, and life limiting disease. This is an area where the department excels, and we would look to promote and develop this in any new members of the team.

- Assisting in the smooth running of out-patient clinics
- Communication and emotional support of the patient
- Supporting nursing staff in the cancer treatment rooms
- Maintaining a safe, clean and healthy working environment
- Accurate documentation and communication
- Utilising trust and unit specific IT systems
- Clinical skills including phlebotomy and 12 lead ECG
- Assisting nurse led PICC insertions
- Clerical and organisational skills
- Serving patient drinks and lunches

Education/Experience
Essential
- Completion of the NHS Care Certificate or relevant experience to vocational qualification level 3.
- Or willing to complete the care certificate within the first 3 months of employment
- Knowledge of care and related procedures.
- Experience with manual handling of patients, using lifting aids
- Experience of completing patient care records
Desirable
- IT qualification
- Experience and involvement of an improvement project/s
- Experience of holding an area of responsibility relating to training/audit
