This service assess the suitability of children and young people with complex motor disorders for a deep brain stimulation (DBS) device or an intrathecal baclofen (ITB) pump implantation..
The 8a post will be the lead Occupational Therapist for the service.
The post holder will need to work Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday as the main clinic days.
Main duties of the job
This role involves providing specialist assessment and intervention for children and young people, working in partnership with multi-disciplinary colleagues in Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Neurology, as well as the wider MDT and medical colleagues.
The post holder will have operational oversight and responsibility for delivery of OT assessments and interventions in this tertiary/national service. They will provide clinical leadership to the team and will support the development of the band 7 Occupational therapist in this service.
The post holder is responsible for clinical governance and assurance including, but not limited to, the management of clinical risk and patient safety, compliance with mandatory training, clinical and professional standards. Reporting to the Clinical Lead for Paediatric Occupational Therapy and ultimately the Head Occupational Therapist, this position leads workforce planning, training and development, with oversight of job plans and has responsibility for delivering governance and operational performance.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are looking for an individual with a track record in service development, a demonstrable interest in contributing to the evidence base for clinical practice, and substantial clinical experience of neurological motor-related disorders.
You will be a dynamic, flexible and enthusiastic team player. You will have a good working knowledge of current literature supporting motor interventions for children with neurological disabilities, and the ability to articulate your clinical reasoning for interventions to colleagues and families.
You will be experienced in setting client-centred rehabilitation goals and will offer a family-centred service. This role requires close liaison and working in partnership with community therapy services, education services, and/or other appropriate agencies.
You will support children to work towards meaningful goals focusing on functional skills and independence in areas of self-care, school/work and leisure/play, alongside their families and local teams.
There is the potential to participate in departmental audits or research projects. There is also the opportunity to increase your knowledge and skills through participation in team and hospital wide continuing professional development programmes, supervision of junior staff members and students, appraisal, in-service training and joint working.

- Specialist knowledge, understanding and application of advanced Occupational Therapy processes relating to client centred practice.
- Ability to deliver best-evidenced practice in assessment and treatment to support care and comfort goals or functional goals in children with complex disability.
- Demonstrate clinical leadership skills and excellent team building skills.
- Ability to work autonomously, acting decisively on behalf of self and others and setting own priorities when dealing with complex and sensitive situations.
Desirable
- Experience in management and development of operational policies
- Previous experience as head/lead of department/service.
- Previous experience of clinical service development

- Adherence to College of Occupational Therapy and HCPC guidelines and codes of ethics and professional conduct.

- Highly developed specialist knowledge of patient group with knowledge of cerebral palsy (all classifications of GMFCS & MACS), acquired brain injuries, orthopaedic conditions, trauma and developmental disabilities .
- High standard of performance in a range of specialist and innovative neuro-developmental and general paediatric skills.
- Participated in service development and delivery and strategic planning for unit/Trust
- Previous experience as head/lead of department/service.

- Experience designing, implementing, participating or writing up qualitative or quantitative research
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
- Occupational Therapy Degree or equivalent qualification
- Evidence of post graduate education in relevant clinical area.
- Has achieved or is working towards Masters degree or showing capacity to work at Masters degree level
