Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated midwife to join our research team at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Working in the Vaccine Institute, you will be overseeing and conducting a variety of maternal vaccine studies as well as supporting the broader infectious diseases  portfolio.

This role will include contributing to commercial trials, public health studies and NIHR funded trials.

Main duties of the job

  • Works within the scope and code of professional practice.
  • Perform and record a range of participant assessments and physiological measurements required, according to personal competencies and the study protocol. This may include, but not be limited to, venepuncture, blood pressure, urinalysis, weight and height, fetal heart monitoring
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects and research sites, requiring flexibility and adjustment according to demand.
  • Where appropriate and in line with training competencies the post holder may be required to support multiple aspects of study delivery including screening, recruitment, consent, delivering interventions, follow ups, data management, sample collection and processing as required, across all specialties and settings.
  • Adhere to NMC Code and Scope of professional conduct/practice and policies which govern clinical practice at local and national level.
  • Actively contributes to a culture of continuous improvement and wellbeing.
  • Engage with, recruit and support participants from a broad spectrum of diverse communities from various settings.
  • Ensure through professional conversations, the positive impact of patient and public involvement and engagement on the design, delivery and dissemination of research.

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 2 years post registration clinical experience as a midwife
  • Experience working as a midwife within maternity services
  • Experience of working independently and part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of providing patient-centred care and explaining complex information to women and families

Desirable

  • Experience in clinical research
  • Experience with paediatric patients
  • Experience working in a community setting
  • Experience of audits or service/quality improvement projects

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Knowledge of safeguarding, consent, confidentiality and information governance
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • Good IT skills including electronic patient records and MS Office applications
  • Strong communication skills
  • Accurately perform a range of physiological measurements within scope of practice
  • Excellent attention to detail and record keeping

Desirable

  • Venapuncture
  • Experience with working with trial protocols, CRFs and adverse event reporting
  • Ability to support and train colleagues and students

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Registered Midwife (RM) with current NMC pin
  • Degree in Midwifery (or equivalent)
  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Desirable

  • Valid Good Clinical Practice certificate
  • Teaching, mentor or assessor qualification
