Job overview

The post-holder will be part of an innovative research team, led by Professor Sobha Sivaprasad, Director of the Clinical Research at Moorfields Eye Hospital. The principle aim for this post will be to facilitate clinical research and trials for adults and paediatric patients. The individual will be involved in the detailed phenotyping of patients with various ocular diseases and be involved in grading of retinal images in the Moorfields Reading Centre. The post holder will identify suitable participants for clinical trials and natural history studies. They will also see the recruited trial / study patients at their screening, baseline and follow-up visits.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be based in the Clinical Research Facility at Moorfields Eye Hospital and they will be integrated in a large team of clinicians and scientists developing new treatments for ocular diseases. He/she will acquire expertise in the use and interpretation of a range of psychophysical assessments including microperimetry and detailed colour vision assessments, and imaging studies including fundus photography, autofluorescence imaging, and high-resolution optical coherence tomography. Whilst experience in some of these techniques would be an advantage, full training will be provided where necessary, so candidates lacking direct experience in these areas but having the necessary background skills and showing technical aptitude are also encouraged to apply.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Collect clinical data (including history, examination findings, any investigations) and collate in custom-designed case report forms and databases.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the research team and clinical colleagues.
  • Recruit and co-ordinate patients for studies and clinical trials
  • Organise, maintain and analyse project data
  • Responsibility for clinical data management and liaison with the lead investigator
  • Participate in weekly clinical meetings
  • Active participation in other ongoing research projects
  • Achieve goals, agreed in discussions with their line manager
  • Present the results of the project in national and international meetings
  • Prepare the results of the project for publication
  • Perform any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the post, the title of the post and its grading as requested by their line manager
  • Undertake patient and public involvement exercises to promote the disease and the research

Person specification

Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Should have evidence of peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience in literature searches
  • Experience interacting and working with research patients
  • Ability to interpret standard ophthalmological medical notes and investigations such as visual fields, AF and OCT
  • Ability to learn to perform retinal imaging techniques and psychophysical assessments of vision

Desirable

  • Should have experience of previous ophthalmology research and clinical trials

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration (with a Licence to Practice) or be eligible for GMC Registration
  • Completion of Specialist Ophthalmology Training or Equivalent
