We are seeking an experienced Clinical Psychologist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing care and support to individuals with learning disabilities within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The Tower Hamlets Community Learning Disabilities Service operates as an integrated health and social care multidisciplinary service. This service is dedicated to facilitating collaboration with local health and social care providers, ensuring that individuals with learning disabilities can access mainstream services when feasible, and that their experiences and outcomes are positive. Furthermore, the service delivers specialized support to clients as required.
The role entails delivering highly specialized clinical psychology services to individuals with learning disabilities, as well as their families and caregivers. This includes assessment and the development and implementation of specialized psychological interventions. The postholder will assume a key position within the Tower Hamlets Community Learning Disabilities Service, with a particular emphasis on providing Positive Behavior Support interventions designed to assist clients, their families, and broader systems in managing behaviors of concern. The postholder will also contribute to the ongoing development of both the field of psychology and the service itself.
In this role, the postholder will operate autonomously, managing a designated caseload of complex cases independently, demonstrating problem-solving abilities and clinical reasoning skills in accordance with evidence-based and client-centered principles. Additionally, the postholder will engage in clinical research and development activities when appropriate.
Main duties of the job
- Ensure that clients receive a high standard of clinical care, while also mentoring junior staff to provide a comprehensive and suitable psychology service for clients, families, and caregivers.
- Take a leading role in the advanced assessment and treatment of clients presenting with acute, chronic, or complex issues, identifying the necessary clinical diagnoses and interventions.
- Evaluate clients’ needs and refer them to other services when appropriate.
- Maintain accurate records as an independent practitioner.
- Communicate effectively with health and social care professionals, as well as external agencies, regarding client care and progress.
- Keep other team members informed about policies, service development, and management plans.
- Manage a substantial clinical caseload with a focus on Positive Behavior Support interventions, while working under supervision and collaborating with various agencies along with health and social care professionals.

Essential
- Relevant experience working as a qualified Clinical Psychologist in learning disability settings
- Experience of working with people with behaviors considered to be complex or challenging
- Experience of assessing and treating the mental health needs of people with learning disability across the full range of care settings
- Work in a multi-cultural setting, including working with interpreters
Knowledge and skills
Essential
- Able to provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information in a highly emotive and sometimes hostile atmosphere, in a range of relationships and settings
- Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies for people with learning disabilities who have complex needs
- Able to analyse highly complex outcome data from a number of sources and provide clear advice to colleagues supporting the understanding
- Skills in the use of highly complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management in relation to people with learning disabilities.
- Knowledge of psychological research, national policy and legislation relevant to learning disability
Education/Qualification
Essential
- Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS
- HCPC registration
Desirable
- Relevant specialist training or qualifications e.g. CBT, systemic therapies, neuropsychology, etc.
