We are looking for a skilled and motivated Clinical Photographer to join a forward thinking Medical Illustration team. This role supports clinical services across the Trust through high quality photography for patient care, education and communication. You will work closely with healthcare professionals to deliver accurate, consistent and sensitive imaging in a range of clinical settings.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will undertake clinical photography across a variety of specialties, ensuring images are technically accurate and clinically useful. This includes patient identification, consent and data handling in line with policy. You will manage your own workload, contribute to service improvements and support colleagues where needed. The role also involves maintaining equipment, adhering to departmental standards and engaging with digital workflows and asset management systems.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will provide a comprehensive clinical photography service, capturing, processing and delivering images to support diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. The role requires strong technical ability, attention to detail and a patient centred approach. You will follow established protocols for consent, confidentiality and infection control, while contributing to ongoing development of the service. The postholder will also liaise with clinical teams, support teaching or audit activity where appropriate, and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Excellent standard of IT skills. Ability to use the following software packages: Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact sensitively with patients, including those who may be distressed or where there are barriers to communication
  • Thorough understanding of consent and confidentiality issues
  • Highly developed hand/eye coordination for specialist imaging techniques
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to view high volumes of images using display screen and use photographic equipment which will require a high level of concentration
  • Attention to detail
  • Understanding and application of standardised clinical photography techniques
  • Willingness to develop skills across the wider Medical Illustration service, for example video or digital media

  • Experience of creative or non-clinical photography
  • Experience of video production

Knowledge and Experience

  • Reference based evidence of practical experience in clinical photography and specialist imaging of a consistently high standard

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Possess a degree in photography or related media subject or equivalent level of knowledge and experience
  • Eligible for AHCS registration
  • You will be required to travel to other locations in the Southwest. You must have a driving license

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Illustration or equivalent experience
  • Willingness to use of own car/vehicle
