Job overview

Clinical Nurse Specialist for Hepatology and Liver Cancer Surveillance - 15 month fixed term contract

We are delighted to introduce an exciting opportunity within our Hepatology Specialist Nursing Service at GWH. This pioneering role will be instrumental in delivering a nurse-led liver surveillance pathway — a vital initiative designed to enhance care for patients with stable, compensated liver cirrhosis, as well as those at elevated risk of developing Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC).

By focusing on proactive monitoring and support in the outpatient setting, this pathway aims to improve outcomes and empower patients through earlier detection and streamlined care.

Main duties of the job

Are you passionate about advancing liver care and making a real impact in early liver cancer detection? We’re excited to offer a unique opportunity for a dedicated nurse to join our expanding Hepatology Nursing Service at GWH.

In this dynamic role, you will:

  • Lead nurse-led HCC surveillance clinics for patients diagnosed with compensated cirrhosis, delivering proactive and patient-centered care.
  • Collaborate with our hepatology pathway coordinator to embed a new, trust-wide HCC surveillance programme, supporting patients at high risk of developing Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC).
  • Participate in nurse-led FibroScan clinics, helping to detect liver disease early and stratify patients for appropriate surveillance and intervention.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments for patients entering liver cancer surveillance pathways, planning, implementing, and evaluating tailored care plans.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation in hepatology nursing, helping shape a service that improves outcomes and empowers patients through early detection and personalised care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Hepatology Surveillance Specialist Nurse will work to further develop and establish a nurse-led liver surveillance pathway. This pathway will support patients with stable, compensated liver cirrhosis and those who are in high-risk groups of developing Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the outpatient setting.
