Job overview

To be a physiotherapy clinical expert in the management of patients with renal conditions for Kings College Hospital and provide expert clinical intervention for patients with renal problems. To be responsible for the operational management and clinical leadership of the physiotherapy service in renal outpatients in conjunction with the Physiotherapy Manager and Renal Consultants.

The post holder will be required to work at Tessa Jowell Health Centre, Kings College Hospital and Denmark Hill weekly. There are also sessions to various haemodialysis units across SEL.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for the efficient, effective and safe management of patients referred to the renal physiotherapy service, including those requiring rehabilitation programmes and those with musculoskeletal conditions
  • To receive referrals and independently assess and treat own caseload of patients as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care. To ensure a high standard of clinical practice for patients under your management and to support more junior staff to do likewise
  • To use advanced clinical assessment and reasoning skills and evidence based knowledge to assess patients with highly complex conditions, and to formulate prognoses and recommendations for the best form of intervention for patients with chronic kidney disease. e.g. management of patients referred to specialist renal weight management clinic and specialist renal rehabilitation programmes
  • To make appropriate referrals to other services and clinicians based on assessment and investigation findings, and by having an in-depth understanding of the role of others in the multidisciplinary team
  • To have knowledge of a wide range of advanced treatment techniques such as manual and manipulative physiotherapy techniques, taping, exercise therapy, and patient advice and education.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To ensure effective discharge planning within the team, liaising with other members of the MDT as appropriate
  • To deliver physiotherapy in different locations, according to the requirements of the post e.g. Trust premises, community premises
  • To use advanced theoretical and practical knowledge to advise, guide and teach less experienced physiotherapists, assistants and students in the assessment and management of patients and other aspects of clinical care, including record keeping.
  • To provide specialist recommendations or second opinion of clinical management and expert advice to the MDT, including peers and consultants, and external organisations.
  • To liaise with the Renal Consultants to formulate protocols/care pathways for the assessment and management of patients attending the Renal Outpatient clinics
  • To manage clinical risk within own clinical caseload, and ensure that clinical risk is effectively managed across the physiotherapy renal team
  • To be an active member of the weekend duty orthopaedic rota, and cover of statutory and public holidays, maintaining the competency required to work as the sole physiotherapy practitioner within this clinical area (optional after first year in post)

  • Experience of teaching and presenting to other staff
