We have an exciting opportunity for you to be one of UCLH’s Clinical Research Fellow Acute Medicine from August 2026. This is an ideal post for doctors training in any medical specialty with a general internal medicine component looking to undertake an out of programme experience, or doctors looking for research opportunities before entering higher specialty training.

This 12-month role is aimed doctors who are passionate about developing research skills in the areas of clinical informatics and data science. No specific experience in data science research is necessary; however, fellows will bring their clinical knowledge to bear and learn key skills relating to the delivery of research programmes. Fellows will develop generic research skills, including: developing applications for externally-funded research (research training fellowships, clinician scientist fellowships), generating pilot data, formal training in research methods, biostatistics or systematic review, boosting recruitment to CRN portfolio studies, improving publication profile.

All applicants must be eligible for full GMC registration. Applicants must ideally be post-IMT2 (or equivalent) and be competent to work at ST3 and above. UK-based trainees would be encouraged to seek prospective approval for Out of Programme Experience from their Training Programme Director.

Main duties of the job

Fellows will develop generic research skills, including:

This will be alongside a commitment to clinical work in acute medicine, working at a registrar level in Same Day Emergency Care and the Enhanced Care Unit within the AMU. The post is divided into a roughly 50/50 split between research work and clinical work.

Fellows will operate on a rota separate to the core medical staff, though would be expected to lead the acute medical take as the Departmental Medical Registrar in the event of any absences or rota gaps (during day shifts only).

Clinically they will work under direct supervision of the Acute Medicine service consultants and their educational supervisor in Acute Medicine.

This 12-month Clinical Informatics Fellowship in Acute Medicine is a combined clinical and research post based in the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The role is designed for post-MRCP doctors who wish to develop skills in clinical informatics, epidemiology and data science while maintaining active clinical practice. The Fellow will spend 50% of their time undertaking supervised research and 50% delivering registrar-level clinical care within AMU, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and the Enhanced Care Unit (ECU). Research duties include contributing to established projects, recruiting to portfolio studies, collecting and analysing clinical data, developing research skills in methodology and biostatistics, and supporting academic publications and funding applications.

Clinical responsibilities include assessing and managing acutely unwell medical patients, providing senior decision-making support to junior doctors, supervising resident staff, participating in the acute medical take, and occasionally deputising for the Duty Medical Registrar. The Fellow works within a multidisciplinary team and follows a rolling rota that includes daytime, evening and some enhanced hours.

The post offers structured supervision, educational support, and opportunities to build academic output while delivering high-quality acute medical care in a large tertiary centre.
