A whole-time post as a Clinical Fellow in Paediatric anaesthesia is available now at the John Radcliffe Hospital (Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust).

Main duties of the job

Clinical sessions will be agreed with the Clinical Lead and will form the basis of the Fellowship job plan. The Fellow will rotate through a modular programme, consisting of four blocks of three months, providing exposure to all the paediatric anaesthetic sub-specialties offered in Oxford. These include:

  • -          Paediatric General Surgery (including thoracic) -          Paediatric Urology -          Paediatric Gastroenterology -          Paediatric Scoliosis & Spinal surgery -          Paediatric Neurosurgery -          Neonatal Surgery -          Paediatric Craniofacial Surgery -          Paediatric ENT -          Paediatric Dental -          Paediatric Orthopaedic surgery -          Paediatric Interventional Radiology (lines) -          Paediatric Imaging (CT & MRI) -          Paediatric Cleft Surgery -          Paediatric Opthalmology -          Paediatric Plastic surgery -          Paediatric Maxillo-facial surgery -          Paediatric Haem-Onc Services

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Opportunities for teaching, training and research will be available within the fellowship programme and will be agreed by the Lead for Paediatric Anaesthesia Fellowship Training with the post holder prior to commencement of the fellowship. In particular – co-ordination and running of the Paediatric Anaesthetic journal club for trainees; as well as the Oxford Paediatric Anaesthetic CPD day, form part of the teaching roles encouraged within this post.

The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities (within the Paediatric Anaesthetic group and the larger NDA group). Clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management and quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies will be expected and strongly encouraged. It is advised that a suitable project is targeted that can be completed within the Fellows’ employment with the Trust, and one which the Paediatric Anaesthetic Group feels would benefit their service as a whole.

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 6 months higher/ advanced training in Paediatric Anaesthesia, at start of post, as evidenced by logbook
  • Evidence of interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia and a desire to acquire the skills and competencies required to become a Paediatric Anaesthetist.
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions and to manage clinical problems commensurate with that of a doctor in a senior training post.
  • Evidence of undertaking clinical management.

Desirable

  • Prior post-CCT Fellowship in Paediatric Anaesthesia.

Other Requirements

Essential

  • Willing to reside in Oxford, or travel to Oxford daily for this post.
  • Be at the John Radcliffe Hospital site within 30 minutes travel by car, for non-resident on calls.

Desirable

  • Driving license

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Evidence of team leadership skills and organisational skills, to be able to effectively undertake the role of a Fellow within a large, multi-site Teaching Hospital.
  • A good understanding of the organisational structure of the NHS and the government’s agenda for its’ modernisation, with particular attention to Paediatric Anaesthesia.
  • Management training and experience. APLS provider.
  • Elegant interpersonal skills and awareness of one’s own limitations. Ability to seek help when needed. Good situational awareness. Abides by GMC ‘Good Medical Practice’ guide. Keen to maintain high standards of care & competence.
  • Fluent spoken and written communication in the English language. Communication skills should be highly developed.
  • Evidence of teaching medical, nursing and allied health professionals; at under-graduate and post-graduate level.
  • Evidence of audit and clinical governance activities relevant to Paediatric Anaesthesia.
  • Evidence of an interest in current research relevant to Paediatric Anaesthesia.

Desirable

  • Higher qualification in leadership or management.
  • Prior involvement in the management of Anaesthesia services provision for a Trust.
  • Post-Graduate fellowship in simulation or education.
  • Post-Graduate degree in Education, APLS/ ALS/ PILS instructor (or GIC equivalent).
  • National and international presentations and/ or publications of work relevant to Paediatric Anaesthesia.
  • Evidence of research publications, preferably in Paediatric Anaesthesia.

Qualifications/ Training

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent. Full GMC Registration. FRCA.
  • Currently employed within a recognised senior Anaesthetic training program, or on the specialist register in Anaesthesia or within 6 months of obtaining CCT in Anaesthesia.

Desirable

  • Higher medical degree.
  • Prior post-CCT Fellowship in Paediatric Anaesthesia.
