The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH), Oswestry, is delighted to offer the Oswestry McGeoch Fellowship, a post-CCT fellowship designed to prepare successful candidates for life as a Consultant Arthroplasty Surgeon.

Named in honour of the late Mr Christopher McGeoch, who established the Arthroplasty Department at RJAH in 1998, this fellowship provides advanced training in primary hip arthroplasty, primary knee arthroplasty, and revision hip arthroplasty within one of the UK's leading specialist orthopaedic centres.

RJAH is recognised nationally and internationally for excellence in orthopaedic surgery and education. As one of the highest-volume arthroplasty units in the country, the department offers an outstanding clinical environment for fellowship training. In 2025, the unit performed 1,586 primary total hip replacements, 1,655 primary total knee replacements, and 157 revision total hip replacements. This case volume ensures exposure to a comprehensive spectrum of arthroplasty practice, ranging from routine primary joint replacement to complex revision surgery. As well as the full spectrum of revision surgery, the successful candidates will be exposed to fully cemented, hybrid and uncemented primary THR.

Main duties of the job

The fellowship will be supervised by Mr Robin Banerjee and is specifically designed to bridge the gap between specialist training and independent Consultant practice. The successful applicant will gain extensive operative experience, develop confidence in decision-making and surgical planning, and acquire the skills required to manage both straightforward and complex arthroplasty patients.

The proposed timetable includes two and a half days of operating each week, alongside dedicated outpatient clinic experience and revision MDT. Operative exposure will include primary hip replacement, primary knee replacement, and revision hip arthroplasty, with opportunities to observe and participate in complex revision cases performed by other consultants within the department.

In addition to clinical training, the fellowship includes protected time for research, audit, and quality improvement activities. Fellows will be encouraged to present their work at national and international meetings and to produce peer-reviewed publications.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will be an integral member of the Lower Limb Arthroplasty team and will work closely with Mr Banerjee, Mr Duckett and the wider multidisciplinary team. The fellowship is designed to provide advanced subspecialty experience in hip and knee arthroplasty and to facilitate the transition to independent consultant practice.

The post-holder will:

• Participate in regular elective operating lists, gaining experience in primary hip and knee, and revision hip arthroplasty.
• Develop advanced operative skills in complex primary and revision arthroplasty, including management of bone loss, injection and other complex reconstructive problems, as appropriate to their experience and training needs.
• Undertake operative procedures with a graduated level of responsibility, progressing from supervised to independent operating where appropriate and where the supervising consultant is satisfied with the fellow’s competence.
• Participate in the assessment and management of patients undergoing arthroplasty, including pre-operative assessment, operative planning and post-operative care.
• Attend regular outpatient clinics, including pre-operative, post-operative and specialist arthroplasty clinics, with opportunities to develop independent clinical decision-making under appropriate supervision.
• Participate in the management of elective inpatients, including ward rounds, assessment of post-operative patients and management of complications.
• Participate in the multidisciplinary management of complex arthroplasty patients, including relevant infection, radiology and other specialist MDT meetings.
• Gain experience in the investigation and management of periprosthetic joint infection, including revision strategies and staged treatment where applicable.
• Participate in departmental teaching of medical students and resident doctors.
• Participate in clinical audit, research and quality improvement projects relevant to arthroplasty surgery.
• Be encouraged and supported to present research and audit work at regional, national and international meetings and to publish relevant work.
• Maintain an appropriate operative logbook and portfolio and participate in regular appraisal and educational supervision.

The post-holder will be expected to demonstrate progressive development throughout the fellowship, with increasing autonomy in clinical assessment, decision-making and operative practice where appropriate. The precise level of independent practice will be determined by the fellow’s experience, competence and the clinical circumstances, with consultant support available at all times.

The fellowship is intended to provide advanced subspecialty training and experience in preparation for a future substantive consultant appointment in lower limb arthroplasty.
