Post: Clinical Fellow in Urology ST7+ based at Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital

The Bristol Urological Institute wishes to appoint a Clinical Fellow in Urology ST7+, for 12 months.

Candidates should have recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practice. Candidates must currently be working in a UK NHS hospital and have a desire to practice Andrology in the NHS.

Some experience in advanced urological procedures is essential.

Please note North Bristol NHS Trust will not pay any interview expenses in connection with this post.

Main duties of the job

Clinical experience

The successful candidate will be in their final year of training (or equivalent) and have passed FRCS (Urol) or equivalent. Experience of basic urological procedures will be essential for this post such as urethral and suprapubic catheterisation, flexible cystoscopy as well as skills required for CCT e.g. TURP, TURBT and ureteric stenting. Experience of working with older or disabled people will be desirable.

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of ward patients. There is an expectation that the post-holder may be asked to cover the on-call rota where there is a gap.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the service activities in the department.

Research

½ day dedicated research session is provided for all fellows/SpRs. There is opportunity for research projects in several clinical areas, best suited to the career progression of the successful applicant.

Teaching

The Bristol Urological Institute has an active teaching programme and Fellows and Registrars are expected to actively participate in this activity. The post holder will be available to undertake teaching sessions for medical students and junior doctors as required. In certain circumstances you may be required to cover a colleague’s clinical duties in order that they may deliver teaching sessions.

Essential

  • Demonstrate experience in teaching undergraduates and postgraduates

Desirable

  • Demonstrate experience of case presentation.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Evidence of understanding and application of knowledge of speciality
  • Willing to seek help from senior colleagues as appropriate
  • To have completed an Audit Project

Desirable

  • To have completed the audit cycle

Experience

Essential

  • Familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices and must be currently working in an UK NHS hospital
  • Experience as a specialist registrar or equivalent in urology (5 years at least)
  • Skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.

Desirable

  • Experience in benign and malignant penile surgery

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC
  • FRCS (Urol) or equivalent Must be a member of Bri sh Associa on of Urological Surgeons (BAUS)
  • Completed structured training in urology and wishing to pursue a career in Andrology/Genito urethral surgery in the UK
  • Evidence of training progression

Desirable

  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS)
  • Prizes
  • ATLS/ALS

Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Competent in the management of elective and emergency urology patients
  • Competent in core urology procedures (Cystoscopy, TURP, TURBT, Stenting etc)
  • Experience of basic life support and resuscitation skills

Desirable

  • Accepts responsibility and able to take leadership role for ward based emergencies.

  • Able to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives
  • Able to establish good working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to organise own learning
