Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust has a exciting position of Clinical Fellow Ophthalmologist with an interest in Cataract post available within their Ophthalmology Department.

This post is based at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe General and Amersham Hospitals in Buckinghamshire) and is for 12 months Fixe4d Term in the first instance with a possible extension for a further 12 months. This post is available from October 2026. All applicants MUST have a GMC registration and 'Licence to Practice in the UK' This is not a training post, it is purely for service provision and we require a surgeon who can comfortably operate independently with 8-10 cases on a list.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will have access to training in the management of complex cataract cases including the management of pseudoexfoliation, short and long eyes, zonular dehiscence, post-trauma cases and IOL exchange.

The successful candidate will be required to provide up to 5 independent surgical lists a week. Please note, this is not a training post, it is purely for service provision and we require a surgeon who can comfortably operate independently with 8-10 cases on a list. Included in the timetable are pre-op assessment clinics and a limited number of primary care/emergency access clinics.

Research and audit are actively encouraged. Supervision of junior trainees may be required depending on experience. The hospital is equipped with an EyeSi surgical simulator as well as a conventional wet-lab facility and surgical training is encouraged and supervised.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • 3 years experience in training grades in ophthalmology
  • Ability to take an ophthalmic history, perform an ophthalmic examination, request and interpret common ophthalmic investigations and formulate a clinical management plan without immediate supervision.
  • Experience as SpR or equivalent
  • Esstential to be competent to undertake phacoemulsification independently
  • Competent to administer intravitreal injections
  • Competent to perform laser retinal photocoagulation
  • Able to deliver high volume cataract surgery with good outcomes with logbook evidence
  • Competent to train resident doctors in phacoemulsification

Desirable

  • Competent to perform YAG Laser Capsulotomy

Other Requirements

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice in the UK
  • Able to travel across sites
  • 3+ year substantive employment within the NHS & Ophthalmology speciality in the UK.

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • MB,BS or equivalent
  • Furter qualification or degree relating to Cataract

Desirable

  • MRCOphth or FRCOphth Part 1 or equivalent

Skills, Knowledge and Personal

Essential

  • Good personal organisation and time management skills.
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Good spoken and written English
  • Communication skills should be highly developed.
  • Basic computer literacy and keyboard skills
  • Experience of clinical audit

Desirable

  • Practical experience of clinical administration (eg responsibility for duty rota)
  • Management training and experience
  • Communication skills training
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office applications (or equivalent)
  • Experience of teaching doctors-in-training and undergraduates
