Job overview

The post of Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Dermatology at Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Trust (BCH) provides 12 months of supervised experience for individuals intending to practice as a dermatologist with a special interest in paediatric dermatology or for paediatricians with an interest in paediatric dermatology wishing to develop their experience further/work towards SPIN accreditation. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a minimum of one-year general dermatology experience.

Main duties of the job

The BCH Department of Paediatric Dermatology is recognised nationally and internationally for expertise in Paediatric dermatology.  The Department is the only centre in the West Midlands providing comprehensive, integrated and specialist care to children and adolescents with skin disorders.

The appointee will share in the provision of a secondary and tertiary paediatric dermatology service including covering outpatient clinics, inpatient admissions, ward consultations, telephone advice; booked admissions for investigations and day cases, and supervision of nurse activity. The appointee will participate in the day-to-day running of the national paediatric EB service.

There is currently no out-of-hours on-call commitment. The appointee will be expected to provide cross-cover for his/her colleague during periods of leave and short-term sickness absence.

During supporting professional activity time the appointee, in addition to CPD, will be expected to take an active role in undergraduate, postgraduate and GP teaching, and to participate in audit.

The appointee will also attend appropriate educational activities alongside Resident Doctors on the West Midlands Dermatology Rotation. These include the monthly regional clinical meeting, monthly training meetings, the quarterly Midlands Dermatological Society meetings and the Midlands Dermatopathology Group (3 meetings per year).

CLINICAL:

Outpatient clinics, surgical procedures and treatments take place in a designated area of the Outpatients Department, the Dermatology Day Treatment Unit. Some procedures also take place on the Medical Day Care unit.
