We are inviting applications to fill our Clinical Fellow in Non-Malignant Haematology vacancy at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in Department of Paediatric Haematology & Oncology This post will is fixed term for 1 year. Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice by the intended start date.

Main duties of the job

Join one of the UK's largest specialist haemoglobinopathy services at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust as a Clinical Fellow in Red Cell Disorders (Adult & Paediatric). This 12-month fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for an ST35 level doctor to develop specialist expertise in the diagnosis and management of sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and other inherited red cell disorders within a nationally recognised multidisciplinary service. Working across Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital, you will gain experience in adult and paediatric outpatient clinics, inpatient care, day-unit services, therapeutic exchange transfusion, and specialist multidisciplinary clinics, including obstetric-haemoglobinopathy services. You will work closely with experienced consultants and a dedicated multidisciplinary team while contributing to regional haemoglobinopathy network activities. The post provides excellent opportunities to develop clinical expertise, lead a service improvement project by designing and implementing a paediatric-to-adult transition pathway, participate in research, audit and quality improvement, and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Fellows will also develop skills in the interpretation of specialised haemoglobinopathy investigations and laboratory liaison, supporting their ongoing professional development and future career progression in haematology.

Leeds Children’s Hospital covers 27 medical and surgical specialties and is one of the largest specialist children's hospitals in the country. We have over 20 inpatient wards, employ over 800 nurses and last year held over 170,000 outpatient appointments and treated over 25,000 surgical patients both electively/non-electively.

What you will bring to the role

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Deliver high-quality clinical care to adults and children with sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and other inherited red cell disorders across outpatient, inpatient and day-unit settings under consultant supervision.

Participate in specialist haemoglobinopathy clinics, including new patient, annual review, hydroxycarbamide monitoring and joint obstetric-haemoglobinopathy clinics.Support the management of transfusion programmes, therapeutic red cell exchange and iron chelation therapy, including attendance at specialist multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.

Contribute to the care of inpatients with complex red cell disorders and acute sickle cell complications. Develop expertise in interpreting haemoglobinopathy investigations, including haemoglobin electrophoresis, HPLC and newborn screening results, working closely with laboratory teams.

Lead the development and implementation of a structured paediatric-to-adult transition pathway, including establishing a transition clinic and developing patient information resources.

Attend and actively contribute to local, regional and national haemoglobinopathy MDT meetings.Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, research and service development projects, including regional Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre (HCC) initiatives.

Teach and support the education of medical students, junior doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Maintain accurate clinical records and comply with Trust policies relating to governance, safeguarding, infection prevention and information governance.

Maintain a professional development portfolio, participate in annual appraisal and support progression towards relevant specialist training and examinations where applicable.
