Job overview

This post is a full time, fixed term appointment at SpR level in Luminal Gastroenterology, Hepatology and General Medicine at the Bristol Royal infirmary. This is a 12-month post, with the post holder spending six months in gastroenterology and six months in hepatology (or vice versa).

The successful applicant will join a dynamic team, working clinically to support both inpatient and outpatient work. The post holder will be supported in pursuing endoscopy training, details to be discussed on appointment. There will be the opportunity to lead audit and quality improvement projects, with consultant support. The post holder will be part of the general medical on call rota at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, leading the acute medical take and the out of hours medical inpatient team as medical registrar.

Main duties of the job

The Department of Gastroenterology offers exposure to the regional intestinal failure service and experience in working in complex inflammatory bowel. The clinical aspect of the post can be tailored to the needs of the post-holder with the aim to provide 2 outpatient clinics per week, seeing both new and follow up patients (inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition and general luminal gastroenterology), supervised by a consultant. A regular endoscopy list will also be timetabled with additional endoscopy experience available via the daily acute GI bleed lists and adhoc inpatient lists. The remaining clinical time will be spent supporting inpatient work in gastroenterology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Department of Hepatology is a Level 2 hepatology training centre, providing opportunities to gain experience in a wide range of both general and complex hepatology conditions. The department has strong liver transplant links with the Royal Free Hospital and benefits from dedicated radiology, histopathology, and inpatient hepatology multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.

The post holder will have the opportunity to work closely within the MDT, including specialist nurses (transplant, viral hepatitis, and alcohol services), pharmacists, and dietitians. The department also works closely with the regional Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) MDT, contributing to the management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and involvement in HPB endoscopy services.

The post holder will be actively involved in the care of hepatology patients on the liver unit, reviewing referrals and undertaking 1–2 outpatient clinics per week under consultant supervision.

High-quality postgraduate education is supported through weekly gastrointestinal departmental meetings, the Division of Medicine Grand Round, and regular multidisciplinary meetings. Attendance at Severn General Medicine and Gastroenterology regional training days is encouraged.

Previous endoscopy experience is desirable but not essential.

There is a fixed commitment to the acute general medical take at the BRI (resident on-call, rota frequency approx.. 1:10).
