We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Clinical Fellow to join our Emergency Department team at University Hospital of North Durham.

This post is ideal for doctors who have completed Foundation Training and are looking to develop their clinical skills, gain further experience in Emergency Medicine, or enhance their portfolio before entering specialty training. Working within a busy and diverse Emergency Department, you will be supported by an experienced and approachable team of Consultants, Specialty Doctors, ACPs, nursing colleagues and wider multidisciplinary staff who are committed to delivering high-quality patient care.

You will be allocated an Educational Supervisor who will support your personal and professional development throughout the post. There are opportunities to become involved in quality improvement, teaching, simulation training and ultrasound, alongside funded study opportunities, including up to £1,500 towards relevant educational courses or qualifications such as a PGCert in Medical Education.

We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic and compassionate doctors who have completed Foundation Training, hold a current ALS certificate and are keen to develop their Emergency Medicine experience within a supportive and forward-thinking department.

Main duties of the job

As a Clinical Fellow within our Emergency Department, you will play a key role in the assessment, investigation and management of patients presenting with a wide range of acute illnesses and injuries. Working alongside experienced Consultants, Specialty Doctors, ACPs and multidisciplinary colleagues, you will develop your clinical decision-making skills within a supportive and dynamic environment.

The successful candidate will gain experience across all areas of the Emergency Department, including majors, resuscitation and ambulatory pathways, with opportunities to participate in quality improvement projects, audit, teaching and simulation-based education.

You will be encouraged to contribute to departmental teaching programmes, support the learning of junior colleagues and medical students, and work collaboratively with specialty teams to ensure patients receive timely, safe and effective care.

The Emergency Department at University Hospital of North Durham manages a diverse and challenging case mix, providing excellent opportunities to develop skills across the full spectrum of Emergency Medicine. The department benefits from a strong Consultant presence, experienced middle-grade clinicians, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and a highly skilled nursing workforce who work collaboratively to deliver safe and effective care 24 hours a day.

This post is ideally suited to doctors who have completed Foundation Training and are looking to gain further experience in Emergency Medicine before entering specialty training, or those wishing to develop additional competencies within an Emergency Department setting. Previous Clinical Fellows within the department have successfully progressed into specialty training programmes across the North East and nationally.

Successful candidates will have access to a wide range of development opportunities including point-of-care ultrasound, quality improvement projects, simulation-based education, audit, teaching and leadership experience. Dedicated educational supervision, study leave and support for portfolio development are provided throughout the post.

Approximately 30% of patients attending the department arrive by ambulance, resulting in exposure to a broad range of acute presentations and close working relationships with Acute Medicine, Same Day Emergency Care and inpatient specialty teams. This role offers an excellent platform to build confidence, broaden clinical experience and develop the skills required for a future career in Emergency Medicine or other acute specialties.

Essential

  • Previous experience of working (not observing) within a UK Emergency Department.
  • Experience assessing and managing acutely unwell adult and/or paediatric patients.

Desirable

  • Membership of a relevant Royal College.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent recognised medical qualification.
  • Completion of Foundation Training Programme (FY2) or equivalent.
  • Current Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification.

Desirable

  • ATLS, APLS, MIMMS, EPLS or other relevant Emergency Medicine qualifications.
  • Postgraduate certificate or evidence of further study.

Special Requirements

Essential

  • Ability to participate in a full shift rota including evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays. Enhanced DBS clearance and Occupational Health clearance.
