Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Clinical Advisor (Paramedic/Nurse) works within the Clinical Hub, 999 Operations, delivering safe, high‑quality Hear & Treat telephone assessments to patients of all ages with a wide range of physical and mental health conditions. The post holder uses professional clinical judgement alongside the Manchester Triage System (MTS) to assess risk, identify red‑flag symptoms and ensure patients are directed to the most appropriate care pathway. The role requires excellent communication skills, compassion, resilience and the ability to work autonomously in a fast‑paced emergency call‑centre environment, while upholding the Trust’s values of Caring, Respect and Teamwork and supporting the development of colleagues.

  • Provide high‑quality, safe and clinically effective telephone assessments, triaging and managing patients using professional judgement and the Manchester Triage System (MTS).
  • Assess, triage, treat, diagnose, discharge and refer patients appropriately, identifying red flags and managing clinical risk in acute and chronic presentations.
  • Deliver clear clinical advice, self‑care guidance and targeted worsening advice, ensuring patients understand when and how to seek further care.
  • Support patients to access the most appropriate care pathway, helping to minimise unnecessary hospital admissions where clinically appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive clinical records in line with information governance and confidentiality requirements.
  • Liaise effectively with multidisciplinary teams and partner agencies, including emergency call handlers, operational staff, GPs, hospitals, NHS 111 and community services, to ensure safe patient outcomes.
  • Act independently within scope of practice, escalating concerns, safeguarding issues or factors affecting service delivery to Clinical Support Managers when required.
  • Use advanced communication, listening and probing skills to manage complex, emotive or challenging calls, including the use of language support services where needed.
  • Mentor, coach and support new and existing Clinical Advisors, contributing to learning, development and the maintenance of high clinical standards.
  • Participate in clinical supervision, audit, quality improvement activity and incident investigation to support clinical governance and service development.
  • Work in accordance with Trust policies, professional codes (NMC/HCPC), safeguarding requirements, health and safety legislation, equality and diversity principles, and Trust values.

Experience

Essential

  • Post registration clinical experience in primary, urgent, emergency care or ambulance settings
  • Experience of liaising with multi-disciplinary teams, agencies and a variety of stakeholders
