Emergency Pathway, Medicine & Unscheduled Care (MUSC)

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) to join the Emergency Pathway within Medicine and Unscheduled Care as part of a structured rotational programme. This post includes day and night shifts, covering the service Monday – Sunday with a 12 hour shift pattern.

This post will rotate through:

  • Flow Navigation Centre (FNC)
  • Acute Medicine (RAAC/Short Stay Medicine/AMIA)
  • Minor Injuries Unit (MIU)
  • Emergency Department (ED)

The post holder will be encouraged and supported to maintain and develop both their core competencies and any area‑specific competencies required for Advanced Practice in Acute Care. Evidence of working and thinking at Master’s level should be demonstrated within the post holder’s personal professional portfolio. The post holder will have an identified Practice Supervisor and will be allocated dedicated non‑clinical time to ensure compliance with the Advanced Practice Best Practice Guide.

This is a dynamic role, developed in conjunction with the expansion of the ANP/ ACP role within the Flow Navigation Centre (FNC). The post holder will be supported to gain valuable experience and knowledge within all areas of the Emergency Pathway and will contribute to the development of new service models to reflect NHS Grampian’s clinical strategy and improve patient outcomes.

The Emergency Pathway

The FNC provides a central point of contact for professional to professional discussions and directing patients to the most appropriate service. Referrals received from Scottish Ambulance Service, NHS24, Primary Care, Police Scotland, Cancer Treatment Helpline, Care Homes, and Community Pharmacies. Through utilisation of Near Me video and telephone consultations, the post holder will support safe, effective decision‑making to ensure patients receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

Acute Medicine incorporates the Rapid Access Ambulatory Care (RAAC), Acute Medical Initial Assessment (AMIA), DVT service and Short Stay Medical Unit. The post holder will provide high‑level, autonomous clinical practice within the Acute Medicine service, undertaking the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of adults presenting with acute, undifferentiated, or complex medical conditions.

Within the Minor Injury Unit the post‑holder will work autonomously and as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality, person‑centred care, ensuring timely decision‑making and safe, effective management of conditions such as wounds, fractures, sprains, soft‑tissue injuries, burns, and minor head injuries.

Within the Emergency Department the post-holder will provide clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department with undifferentiated, acute, traumatic, and complex conditions. Working at an advanced level of practice, the post‑holder will autonomously deliver safe, timely, and person‑centred care across the full spectrum of emergency presentations, ensuring rapid decision‑making, effective prioritisation, and appropriate escalation.

For further information please contact Dawn Fleeting, dawn.fleeting@nhs.scot (Lead ANP FNC).

An attractive relocation allowance of up to £8,000 is available to successful candidates.

Interviews will be held in-person on 28th May 2026.

Post may close earlier if a large volume of applications are received.
