We are seeking an experienced, innovative and highly motivated Paediatric Tracheostomy Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or Specialist Children’s Physiologist to lead and develop our specialist tracheostomy service. This is an exciting opportunity to take a pivotal role in delivering expert clinical care, driving service improvement, and shaping the future of tracheostomy management for children and young people at The Royal London Hospital.
As the clinical expert for paediatric tracheostomy care, you will support patients from pre-surgical tracheostomy insertion through to discharge, provide ongoing community support, and organise weaning and decannulation when children are ready. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including ENT, Respiratory/Long Term Ventilation, NICU, PICU, Allied Health Professionals, community nursing teams and external partners to ensure the highest standards of safe, evidence-based care.
This is an exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced clinician with a passion for improving care and outcomes for children with tracheostomies and complex airway needs. As the Trust’s specialist lead for paediatric tracheostomy care, you will provide expert clinical support, lead patient pathways from insertion to decannulation, and work closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, high-quality care. You will work closely with teams to drive discharge planning throughout the child’s admission.
Main duties of the job
This role will establish and develop a dedicated paediatric tracheostomy service at the Royal London Hospital, acting as the expert clinical lead and primary point of contact for children, young people, families and the wider MDT. The post-holder will drive service development, clarify and embed care pathways, and deliver high-quality education to both clinical staff and families — ensuring safe, seamless care from diagnosis through to discharge and community follow-up.

Essential
- Knowledge of clinical governance
- Knowledge of paediatric conditions and best practice guidance (tracheostomies, long-term ventilation, ENT)
- Knowledge of legal responsibilities of the profession
Desirable
- Knowledge of risk assessments for self, others, and services
- Knowledge of paediatric long term ventilation pathways
Experience
Essential
- Experience of caring for complex airways and tracheostomies
- Significant’ clinical experience at a band 6 or above
- Experience of leading and implementing service improvement projects (audit, QI & research)
- ENT or critical care experience
Desirable
- Working with stakeholders in service delivery / improvement
- Working across multiple sites / leading trust wide projects
- Experience of management / supervision of staff
Qualifications
Essential
- Degree in Nursing / Physiotherapy / Speech & Language Therapy
- NMC or HCPC Registration
- APLS / PILS certification
Desirable
- Evidence of Masters level education or equivalent
- Post registration critical care / ENT course or equivalent
- Non-medical prescribing
