Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, ambitious and forward-thinking doctor to the role of Chief Registrar for Medicine within the Emergency & Integrated Care Division at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
The Chief Registrar role is a nationally recognised leadership development opportunity for senior doctors and forms part of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Chief Registrar Programme. The role provides protected time to develop and implement local initiatives focused on service improvement, patient care, workforce sustainability, resident doctor engagement and morale, education and training, financial improvement, productivity, and organisational development.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a senior trainee or equivalent grade doctor who is aspiring to develop a future career as a consultant clinical leader, medical manager, clinical director, medical educator, quality improvement leader, or senior NHS leader.
The post is specifically designed to provide practical experience of clinical leadership within a complex NHS organisation, enabling the post holder to work alongside senior clinicians and managers to influence service delivery and organisational priorities.
The post combines 70% clinical responsibilities in general medicine with 30% protected time dedicated to leadership, management, workforce, education, quality improvement and service transformation activities.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will work directly with Divisional Medical Leadership, Hospital Medical Director, Operational Management, Medical Education, and the Chief Medical Officer Team to develop leadership skills across a broad range of areas including:
- Clinical leadership

- Patient safety and quality improvement

- NHS strategy and performance
- Multi-professional leadership
The post holder will act as the Resident Lead for the NHS England Medical Engagement and Resident Doctor 10-Point Plan, helping to improve the experience, wellbeing, development and engagement of resident doctors within the Division.
The role is ideally suited to individuals wishing to build a portfolio of leadership experience ahead of consultant appointment or future senior leadership positions within the NHS. The successful candidate will also have access to regional and national leadership development opportunities and will work alongside fellow Chief Registrars across the Trust and wider NHS network. This leadership focus aligns with the Trust's Chief Registrar programme approach and emphasis on service improvement, workforce engagement, education, and quality improvement.

Experience
Essential
- Experience of working at Registrar level within an acute hospital setting.
- Experience managing acutely unwell medical patients within General Internal Medicine.
- Experience participating in General Internal Medicine on-call rotas.
- Evidence of involvement in audit, quality improvement, service development or patient safety initiatives.
- Experience supervising, supporting and teaching junior doctors and medical students.
- Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable
- Experience leading or coordinating quality improvement or service transformation projects.
- Experience representing trainees, resident doctors or clinical teams.

Education and Qualifications

- Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise.

- Additional postgraduate qualification in leadership, management, education, quality improvement or healthcare improvement.
