We are looking for a skilled and motivated Carpenter to join our Estates Team.
You will undertake a wide range of general carpentry and building fabric maintenance duties alongside the inspection, maintenance, and repair of fire doors to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and NHS standards. Working across the Trust's estate, you will carry out planned preventative maintenance, reactive repairs, and fire safety improvement works, contributing to a safe, compliant, and well-maintained healthcare environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Experience in carpentry, building maintenance, and fire door compliance is desirable, together with a commitment to delivering high-quality customer-focused services.
Main duties of the job
- To maintain and repair equipment in Compliance with all HTM’s (Healthcare Technical Memorandum’s) statutory and mandatory requirements and guidance regulations
- Complete allocated reactive and planned maintenance work in accordance with Trust and departmental policies and procedures
- Respond to emergency and urgent repair requests in a timely and effective manner, restoring services where possible or making services safe until more extensive or specialist work can be undertaken and completed.
- Record and report any further work required as necessary
- Work with minimal supervision to complete planned and reactive maintenance work
- Respond to emergency and urgent calls as required
- Fault finds and repair or replace defective equipment and reinstate services (or relevant components as far as practicable) maintain services to the wards/departments

Essential
- Good verbal and written communication and skills
- Ability to organise and undertake Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programmes for critical Trust systems and equipment
- Highly developed skills for maintaining, calibrating and manipulating fine tools.
- Ability to effectively communicate with Trust Staff at all levels in regard to maintenance and repair arrangements to ensure continuity of care to patients.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on safety and compliance
- Ability to identify defects and assess risks effectively, and to prioritise workload
- Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and manufacturer specifications
- Liaise with external service contractors to arrange site access and oversee shutdown of essential plant and systems

Experience/Knowledge
Essential
- Experience in building maintenance, carpentry, or a related trade
- Multi-skilled but with a bias to carpentry trade
- Experience of inspecting, maintaining, or repairing fire doors or similar building elements
- Understanding of HTM’s, statutory and compliance requirements
- Understanding of fire door components (e.g., seals, hinges, closers, glazing)
- Be able to demonstrate continued training across traditional trade groups
Desirable
- Previous experience of working in large complex building service installations
- Familiarity with CAFM systems or digital maintenance reporting tools
- Experience supporting fire risk assessment actions

- City and Guilds Level 3 Carpentry, Joinery
- Knowledge of relevant fire safety legislation (e.g., RRO 2005, Fire Safety Act 2021, HTM 05)
- Be willing and able to participate in an on-going training development programme within NHS maintenance services
- Evidence of training or practical experience in fire door maintenance/inspection
- Health & Safety training (e.g., IOSH Working Safely or equivalent)
Desirable
- Accredited fire door qualification (e.g., FIRAS, BM Trada, BRE)
