Job summary

The successful postholder will be the main point of contact for all clinical matters, leading a nursing team delivering a Cath Lab service working in modern premises within the grounds of Derriford Hospital.

The postholder will have a key role working with Consultants based within University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.

The role call for a high level of clinical leadership with the opportunity to influence change and implement development of clinical practices within the Cath Lab.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this role is to provide front line clinical leadership and management to all the nursing team working in a modern Cath Lab carrying out diagnostic investigations and invasive procedures for both NHS and Private Patients, ensuring high levels of professional care a maintained and delivered in line with the company values.

Job responsibilities

CLINICAL

Assesses, plans, implements and delivers and evaluates training programmes of care pathways to other nursing staff reporting to the post holder.

Lead on any significant events or incident management , conducting appropriate investigations and reporting on findings to senior management.

Recognise life threatening arrhythmias, deteriorating conditions and take a lead role in emergency situations.

Perform and interpret ECGs, carry out venepuncture and cannulation.

ILS trained and commitment to further ALS training and teaching/assessing for ILS.

Scrub for patients undergoing cardiac catheterisation, EP, pacemaker implantation and PCI, PFA.

Oversee patients care during transfer to NHS hospital for urgent/ongoing/emergency care.

Maintains absolute confidentiality in respect of all medical and nursing records and also inter-personal issues with colleagues.

Escalate any professional clinical concerns to the treating Consultant, providing appropriate and relevant supporting clinical information and observations.

Assist with manual handling and transferring of patients complying with the Moving and Handling policy.

Maintain the privacy and dignity of patients and staff at all times.

MANAGERIAL

To lead care management and nursing delivery during procedures and investigations, coaching and guiding staff as required.

To manage the effective planning of shifts taking into consideration planned patient procedures and clinical cover requirements.

To deliver training on all clinical areas, ensuring all members of the multi -disciplinary team are trained and signed off as competent in their role

To support the Cardiac Matron on governance issues, with specific focus on Cath Lab procedures and protocols.

To maintain own continuing professional development.

To be aware of relevant nursing research and promote and participate in research initiatives.

Assess workloads and be aware of changing situations and act accordingly.

Oversee audit completion and report any concerns to Cardiac Matron where appropriate.

Oversee the annual appraisal process for nursing staff working in the Cath Lab, with a focus on those working at Band 6 and providing tailored training plans to support professional development.

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 5 years post qualification practical experience, ideally 3 years of which have been spent working in a Cath Lab environment
  • Knowledge of EPIC
  • 3 or more year's experience of leading, coaching and mentoring a nursing team
  • Demonstrable experience in leading clinical change programmes focused on patient care and safety
  • Able to coach and mentor less experience and staff

Desirable

  • High level of computer literacy
  • Experience of staffing planning
  • Experience of carrying out staff appraisals and supporting associated development training plans

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse qualification with current registration with NMC
