Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust Cardiopulmonary Service as a Cardiac Physiology Support Worker.

The post holder will play a key role in supporting the delivery of a high-quality, patient-centred cardiac diagnostics service across the Cardiac Physiology Department. Working as part of the wider multidisciplinary team, the Cardiac Physiology Support Worker will provide clinical, technical and administrative support to Cardiac Physiologists undertaking a range of diagnostic investigations, including echocardiography and cardiac rhythm management.

The role will involve preparing clinical areas and equipment, supporting patients before, during and after diagnostic procedures, maintaining accurate patient records, managing stock and equipment, and assisting with the efficient day-to-day operation of the department. The post holder will contribute to ensuring patients receive a safe, professional and compassionate service while supporting the delivery of timely and effective cardiac care.

Main duties of the job

To assist Cardiac Physiologists and administrative staff in maintaining a safe, efficient and effective Cardiac Physiology service. To provide a high standard of patient care before, during and after procedures, working within the scope of training and competence. To prepare patients for investigations and procedures by obtaining relevant measurements and clinical information as required. To support echocardiography, cardiac rhythm management (CRM), cardiac device follow-up and remote monitoring services. To assist with the preparation, registration, distribution and management of cardiac device home monitoring equipment and provide patient support regarding its use.

To maintain accurate patient records and update electronic systems in a timely manner. To communicate effectively with patients, relatives and healthcare professionals, responding to enquiries and escalating concerns where appropriate. To liaise with wards, outpatient areas and other departments to support patient flow and attendance. To assist with patient mobility where required and ensure patient dignity, comfort and safety. To follow infection prevention and decontamination procedures and complete routine equipment and environmental checks. To support outpatient clinics and associated administrative activities, undertake relevant training and competency assessments, and perform any other duties appropriate to the grade as delegated by the Head of Department or designated line manager.

Job responsibilities

Inspect and prepare clinical equipment used within the Cardiac Physiology Service, ensuring compliance with Health and Safety, Infection Prevention and Trust policies at all times. Assist Cardiac Physiologists and administrative staff in maintaining an efficient, safe and effective service across Cardiac Physiology. Provide a high standard of patient care before, during and after diagnostic investigations and procedures, including obtaining patient observations such as height, weight and blood pressure following appropriate training and competency assessment. Assist with patient preparation, positioning and transfers, ensuring patient dignity, comfort and safety are maintained at all times. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, carers and members of the multidisciplinary team, responding appropriately to enquiries and escalating concerns to the relevant member of staff. Demonstrate a professional, caring and compassionate approach whilst maintaining patient confidentiality at all times. Maintain accurate electronic and paper-based patient records, enter activity data onto departmental information systems and assist with the collection of service activity and performance information. Support the delivery of echocardiography, cardiac rhythm management and remote monitoring services, including the preparation, distribution and management of patient information and home monitoring equipment where required. Liaise with wards, outpatient departments, portering services and other healthcare professionals to facilitate patient attendance, investigations and follow-up care. Assist with clinic preparation, appointment management, correspondence and other administrative duties required to support service delivery. Ensure clinical areas are prepared and maintained to meet patient and service needs, undertaking routine equipment, environmental and safety checks and reporting faults, incidents or concerns to an appropriate senior member of staff. Undertake mandatory training, maintain competency within the role and participate in continuing professional development. Adhere to all Trust and departmental policies and procedures and undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as delegated by the Head of Department or designated line manager.
