Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Cardiac Physiologist in Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust to join the Cardiac Outpatients Department at Princess Alexandra Hospital. You will be responsible for performing a range of cardiac diagnostic investigations, supporting the delivery of both routine and more complex cardiac assessments, and ensuring high standards of patient care are maintained at all times. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will manage a daily workload of diagnostic tests within the Cardiac Assessment Unit, communicate effectively with colleagues and patients, and contribute to the efficient delivery of cardiology services across the Trust. You will also support service provision at any location where the Trust delivers care, helping to ensure a responsive and patient-focused service.

Main duties of the job

As a Cardiac Physiologist, you will be responsible for independently recording and interpreting 12-lead ECGs, ensuring that clinically significant findings are escalated in accordance with departmental protocols. You will manage the review of ambulatory cardiac rhythm recordings using specialist analysis systems, producing factual reports to support clinical decision-making. You will also be responsible for evaluating data obtained from event and blood pressure monitoring devices and referring abnormal results where appropriate. Supporting exercise tolerance testing forms a key part of the role, with opportunities to progress from assisting to leading procedures following competency-based training. In addition, you will support cardiac catheterisation services by undertaking haemodynamic monitoring activities within the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory under supervision and developing expertise in invasive cardiac investigations.

Job responsibilities

  • To assist with nurse-led implantable loop recorder implantation sessions, ensuring procedure rooms, consumables, and specialist equipment are prepared and available to support efficient patient throughput.
  • To participate in cardiac rhythm device services, including scheduled implantable device reviews, remote monitoring activities, and supervised pacing clinics, ensuring all activity is recorded in accordance with departmental requirements.
  • To perform and document daily checks of resuscitation equipment and associated emergency resources, confirming readiness for clinical use and promptly reporting any deficiencies for resolution.
  • To operate and maintain electronic patient administration and cardiology information systems, ensuring records are updated accurately and that data handling complies with information governance standards.
  • To work in accordance with national guidance, professional standards, and Trust policies, maintaining compliance with infection prevention measures, clinical governance requirements, and local operational procedures.
  • To support the upkeep of clinical areas and equipment, maintaining a safe, clean, and organised environment while adapting to changing service requirements and undertaking additional responsibilities as agreed with management.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Cardiac Physiology Degree, Healthcare Science (PTP) qualification, or equivalent qualification (or due to qualify this year).
  • Demonstrable experience in ECG recording, interpretation, and cardiac monitor analysis.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment and use patient administration systems.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and time-management skills with a professional approach to confidential information.
  • Experience in cardiac catheterisation laboratories, device follow-up clinics, exercise tolerance testing, or a similar cardiac physiology role is desirable.
