This is an exciting opportunity to join the National and Specialist CAMHS OCD, BDD and Related Disorders Service. They are seeking to recruit a permanent, part time (0.4 WTE) Parent Peer Support Worker. This service is nationally and internationally renowned in the field of paediatric OCD, BDD and related disorders and is at the forefront of research and clinical practice developments.
The service provides specialist assessment and treatment for children with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), BDD (body dysmorphic disorder), and related disorders. We are a large, busy and friendly service and look forward to welcoming a Parent Peer Support Worker to our team.
The Parent Peer Support Worker will use their lived experience of parenting a young person with OCD or BDD to support families accessing the service and inspire hope that recovery is possible. The role will include speaking with families who are hoping to access the service, providing a listening and empathic ear to families on the waiting list, supporting adherence to our treatment protocol and potentially joining group interventions as an expert-by-experience”. The post-holder will work closely with other senior and experienced Clinical Psychologists on the team, a part-time Consultant Psychiatrist, as well as trainees from a variety of disciplines. The post-holder will work in all aspects of the service, clinical, research and service development.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will use their experience to provide support to families accessing the service at all stages (including enquiry calls, supporting families whilst on the waiting list and at point of discharge) and inspire hope for recovery. The post-holder will also be expected to support adherence to our treatment protocol and potentially contribute to a parent group as an expert-by-experience. They will act as a ‘parent consultant’ for the team and use their experience to advocate for the family perspective. The successful applicant will be offered regular supervision and will receive training and support from the SLAM Peer Support Worker network.

The Parent Peer Support worker will also provide an invaluable contribution through acting as a ‘parent consultant’ regarding service developments and support feedback from the Parent Forum to the rest of the team. Key skills will be to provide empathy, understanding and hope.

Experience
Essential
- Personal experience of parenting a young person with OCD/BDD and recovery.
- Experience of using mental health services (for example CAMHS / National and Specialist OCD, BDD and related disorders team/ specialist inpatient provision for OCD/BDD, etc).
- Willing to positively share your own life experiences, with service users and carers and colleagues.
Desirable
- Experience of supporting parents of young people with mental health difficulties (paid or voluntary).
Qualifications
Essential
- Educated to GCSE or equivalent level/or evidence of competency specifically in English and Maths.
- Peer Worker training or willingness to complete training.
Skills and Abilities
Essential
- An ability to act calmly and to respond in a professional manner to distress, disturbance and unpredictability.
- Evidence of good interpersonal skills and an ability to form relationships with service users, staff, friends and families/carers.
- Basic IT skills; Word & Email systems.
Understanding and Knowledge
Essential
- To be able to share lived experience in way that is safe and useful.
- Ability to demonstrate empathy, compassion and patience.
- Ability to demonstrate a good understanding of OCD/BDD.
Desirable
- Knowledge of the evidence-based treatment recommendations, services, charities and challenges of young people with OCD/BDD.
