Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist, Band 6 (22.5 hours a week)

The role of the Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist is to provide emotional support for patients receiving a diagnosis and support through their treatment pathway. The Clinical Nurse Specialist would be present for clinic appointments and follow up patients throughout their pathway and post treatment. The Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist team provide holistic needs assessments for each patient and answer any queries or concerns in a timely manner. In addition, the breast care nursing team support genetics counselling and post operative wound assessments and treatment plans. The post holder will communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team involved in planning and delivering patient care and treatment.

Main duties of the job

- Liaise with the various multi-disciplinary teams regarding the management of patients.

- To use advanced communication skills to: promote a positive working environment, impart significant news, and implement change.

- Complete nurse led appointments and follow up clinics via face to face and telephone where appropriate.

- Complete aseptic technique and wound assessments to create a treatment plan for patients with consultant review.

- Support breast screening programme referrals to the breast service

- Complete patient end of treatment summaries

- Attend weekly breast MDT

- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records.

- Participation within shared governance councils

- To support capacity within the clinical area in order to expedite investigations and improve patient experience

- Support breast care awareness initiatives

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Able to work alongside individual nursing staff or teams, role modelling high standards of practice whilst assessing, delivering and evaluating patient care. Highlight areas of development for team members as required

- Plan and prioritise own workload, liaising with the appropriate administrative support teams as necessary

- To lead and support quality improvement projects in clinical areas

- Participation in Audit and Research, developing research-based practices

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Passion for teaching, education and practice development and ability to professionally develop individuals
  • Demonstrates ability to question and challenge nursing practice in a constructive way so that standards of patient care are continually evaluated and improved
  • Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with surgical urological patients OR Oncology patients
  • Experience of supporting patients who have a cancer diagnosis

Desirable

  • Evidence of post graduate learning

Qualifications

Essential

  • Active registration with the NMC as a Registered Nurse
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of a professional portfolio, registration revalidation & commitment to lifelong learning

Desirable

  • Recognised Health Assessment course or willing work towards
