This is a great opportunity to join the Immunology Department as a Biomedical Scientist

The laboratory is equipped with a range of specialist technologies, including:

  • Phadia 250 analysers for autoimmune and allergy testing
  • Euroimmun Sprinter systems for the preparation of immunofluorescence slides
  • EUROBlot instruments for immunoblot analysis
  • Sebia technology for protein electrophoresis

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual who is ideally currently working within a UKAS-accredited NHS Immunology laboratory and is HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist.

For appointment at Band 6, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Immunology (or a relevant Immunology discipline), or
  • Have a minimum of two years' post-HCPC registration experience in an Immunology laboratory setting.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your specialist knowledge and skills within a supportive and progressive laboratory environment, contributing to the delivery of a high-quality diagnostic Immunology service.

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure the work within Immunology is processed to the required standard, within agreed turnaround times and appropriate action is taken when necessary following departmental procedures.
  • To perform equipment maintenance and quality control of test procedures to agreed schedules within assigned area.
  • To ensure quality compliance to maintain laboratory accreditation to ISO 15189:2022, including participation in audits.
  • To monitor and maintain equipment, to undertake basic trouble shooting and inform section leader of any non-conformities.
  • To contribute to providing reports in a timely manner to contribute to patient care and treatment.
  • Under strict protocols, validate and authorise routine and specialist results, or refer to Immunology clinical staff for release to users where appropriate.
  • To assist with laboratory stores and maintenance of consumable stocks.
  • To suggest ways to improve working practices.
  • To assist with verification of assays or equipment when required.

  • Able to communicate effectively, clearly and professionally at all levels.
  • Ability to participate in laboratory audit procedures.

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Be proficient in the use of information technology, in particular laboratory computer system.
  • Be fully competent with the use of standard Immunology laboratory analysers
  • Demonstrate professional and technical judgement.

Desirable

  • Experience within Immunology
  • Able to assist in instructing and training other staff after a suitable length of experience
