An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Department of Clinical Microbiology at King's Mill Hospital for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) to join our dedicated laboratory team.

We are looking for a committed individual with a passion for delivering high-quality diagnostic services and supporting excellent patient care. The successful candidate will be HCPC registered and will have completed the IBMS Registration Portfolio, with experience of working within a Clinical Microbiology laboratory environment.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

Essential

  • Able to learn all basic aspects of diagnostic microbiology
  • Able to exercise judgment in basic routine problem solving.
  • Able to accurately follow verbal and written instructions and complex protocols
  • Able to work reliably and efficiently under own initiative
  • Able to communicate effectively with staff, patients and external contacts at all levels.
  • Good I.T. skills

Education

Essential

  • BSc in an accredited Biomedical Sciences degree
  • HPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • IBMS Certificate of Competence

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understands the role of a Biomedical Scientist
  • Understands the requirements for professional registration
  • Understands personal Health and Safety responsibilities

Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of basic techniques in Microbiology
  • Some involvement in experimental or laboratory activities

Desirable

  • Previous microbiology laboratory experience

Further Training

Essential

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
